Why not blog about older anime series? Or is ripping on newer shows more fun?
Okay, fine. This summer season has been pretty disappointing, so I’ve come up with an idea. Every subsequent Monday, I will write about an old series. I’ll even watch it from start to finish. I won’t give the show an episodic treatment, of course, but I will do more than… hm, I don’t know… three posts? Does that sound good?
But which old series will I watch? Serial Experiments Lain? Welcome to the NHK? It wouldn’t be fun if I could pick my favorite shows. As a result, I’ve randomly drawn five names out of the hat, and you can vote for one of them in the poll down below. Yes, the internet will decide my fate. You guys have till this Friday to make the choice.
Good people, I entreat you: make EM watch Hanamaru Kindergarten! It’s what he deserves for making me watch that awful Arcana Famiglia show every week!
You’re a good friend.
Voted for AKB0048. It is such a unholy marriage that it is damn worthy of E Minor’s attention.
Outlaw Star is the most interesting just because it’s so much older than the other options. It can make for interesting insight into the perspectives and paradigms of anime over 10 years ago. Or you can watch more of Kawamori’s cynically manufactured idol commercial. Hope your audience likes occult Chinese space pirates!
It’s looking like idols so far, unfortunately.
So you rigged the vote, or what? :D
I haven’t even voted. Nor will I.
Y’know, I said I was being a jerk, but I would legitimately like to see you blog AKBnumbers, because I’ve seen a lot of varying opinions on it.
You said the same thing about UN-GO and Sakamichi no Apollon(maybe).
UN-GO, definitely. I did read your post, but I failed to comment, sadly. I had meant to, but I suddenly had to turn off the computer? I forget the precise circumstances.
I’m not being serious or anything. It serves me right for going on hiatus!
Yeah, bro, you abandoned us ;_;
Ah, no big loss there.
so it’s just the season one of Jigoku Shoujo, right? or is it both seasons?
either way i’d love to see you tackle that one. XD
Just one season. If the show comes up randomly again, I guess I’d do the sequels.
ah. awesome.
Wow your definition of “old” shows is really broad. I was expecting stuff that’s at least 5+ year old, but turns out you just mean stuff that’s finished airing…
I picked five shows at random.
what other shows were in the hat?
There was no hat. I used http://bakabt.me/random until I got a result that wasn’t a movie, comic, music, etc.
Hanamaru Kindergarten because of the endings.
Why did a 12-episode series need so many EDs?
Because Gainax.
I’m afraid
YOU MUST WATCH AKB0048 BEST SHIT EVER MAN
IT’S LOSING MAN
VOTE RIGGING IT’S A CONSPIRACY MAN THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO WATCH AKB0048
Come on, you’re making it sound like all of these shows are bad. Hanamaru had three-year-olds.
Where?
I always thought that that’s what “pick my poison” meant.
BUT HEY, you get to blog outlaw star. That’s Sunrise. And they animated Gintama, so it can’t be that bad.
And Hell Girl surges back for the lead!
Don’t know much about Outlaw Star, but I actually rather liked Hell Girl. You could cut the episode count in half and not lose anything of importance, but it has one of the most satisfying conclusions I’ve seen in an anime. You said on twitter that we watch it and hope the person will pull the red string, I’d be interested to see if you still thought that was what the show is pushing if you watched the whole first season.
Oh well. Unless it comes up again in a later drawing, I guess I just won’t know.
AWW YEAH OUTLAW STAR
Outlaw Star is probably what most people would consider the best choice (and I’ve never actually watched the japanese version) but I also think it’s too easy.
I personally think there is a lot of fat to chew in AKB0048. Part of it you can enjoy on a superficial entertainment level but there is some strange implications. The world 2.5D has been tossed around a bit and while it arguably is a commercial for the group, it’s not 100% product driven and actually portrays some of the less glamorous sides to the idol lifestyle.
For me…the commercial actually sort of succeeded. Not most of the music, but the personalities of all the characters come through and while they aren’t exactly the same in real life, (and some of them are nothing like the real life versions) it’s on the strength of the characters that the show sets itself apart, and the real life versions also have strong personalities that make them fun to watch and dare I say it…root for.
fat to chew/meat to chew/stuff to ponder w/e I really should proofread stuff before I submit it.
I have no knowledge of the Japanese idol industry, and my gut reaction to it is one of repulsion. For what it’s worth, I think it was for the best that AKB0048 didn’t win. I would not have had the patience to allow for the “strong personalities” to shine through.
Yeah, well, it would’ve failed the three-episode test when I tried to watch it earlier today, but I’m forcing myself to stick with the show.
From what I recall of it (which isn’t much), it’s not particularly great at the start. And yes, I am pulling the “it gets better I swear” card on you.
Can’t get any worse!
