Hands down, best show this season. Excellent soundtrack, you really captured the depth of Kazuma’s conflict as he struggles with his forbidden love. This anime is one of the deepest shows I have had the opportunity of watching. Someday, I’ll write an essay about it. It just says so much! Thanks E Minor.

Excellent soundtrack, you really captured the depth of Kazuma’s conflict as he struggles with his forbidden love. … Thanks E Minor.

You flatter me by suggesting that I created the video. Nay, I say, nay! I received this video directly from the creators of the anime. The short music video you see above adds yet another level of subtext to HoshiKaka that I find absolutely intriguing. I commend Dogakoba, the anime studio behind HoshiKaka’s adaptation, for crafting such a daring video of brotherly love and religious salvation.

Kazuma knows that his brother Ayumu is not long for this world as a fatal illness slowly ravages Ayumu’s body. The brothers return to Yamabiko to allow Ayumu’s final days to pass peacefully, but here, surrounded by the town’s rusticity, Kazuma feels closer to God than ever before. He thus intends to not only to see his brother’s final days, but also send him off to religious paradise. Kazuma believes this can be achieved this through sexual pleasure.

But how? — you ask — how can sex with Ayumu’s frail, sickly body send him off to spiritual bliss? Could Ayumu’s body even withstand the pain? Pain is the key. As the soundtrack suggests, through domination and submission during sex, Ayumu receives his ascension. Practitioners of S&M describe a religious ecstasy when certain thresholds are crossed.

In the song, the woman sings of the conflict within, her struggle between the Christian beliefs that sex, domination, submission, pain and humiliation are evil and her insatiable temptation to sin through S&M. There’s a thin line between the self-flagellation used during the Middle Ages and the sexual practices of S&M, i.e. punishment of the body to attain spiritual awakening. The love between Kazuma and Ayumu serves to attain the same effect, turning the tables on Ayumu’s illness.

Incredible! I love shows like Hoshizora, there’s just so much you can talk about. Religious salvation and S&M? Wow. I never thought of that. The creators are GENIUSES! There’s so much symbolism in the video itself so for a simple minded viewer such as I, I miss out on a lot of details. I didn’t think that it’d be this tragic between Kazuma and Ayumu. Now it’s hard to see if this can ever have a good end.

I wonder though, do you think Ayumu’s ‘ascension’ have something to do with the title of the show itself? I know it’s about a legend pertaining to a ill-fated couple and I couldn’t help but think that there’s some sort of parallelism going on. And what do the girls represent in this show? I don’t think we can count them out just yet, seeing as the creators gives importance to each character. Along with Ayumu, there’s 7 people vying for Kazuma’s love. I decided to look into the number 7 and whatever symbolic meaning it may carry. In a way, in the bible 7 represents completeness, fullness. I suppose this indicates that Kazuma’s life will reach full circle, together living his life with Ayumu and his harem.

I’m not certain where this show will take us, but it’s so thought provoking and multi-faceted! Never since Evangelion have I been so immersed in a show rich with symbolism and deep themes. If only more shows were like Hoshizora!

Clearly, the girls represent the seven deadly sins, i.e. the girls are here to lead Kazuma astray of his righteous path.

          1) Ui is gluttony, obviously, as she’s always stuffing herself with food.
          2) Ibuki is envy, jealous of Ui from the day she found her locking lips with Kazuma.
          3) Koyori is wrath, a mean-spirited loli.
          4) I’ll do the rest after I finish my rotisserie chicken dinner. Damn, that is good food.

The accumulated filth of all their hentai and futanari will foam up about their waists and all the otakus and NEETs will look up and shout “Save us!”… and I’ll look down and whisper “No.”

Don’t talk like one of them. You’re not! Even if you’d like to be. To them, you’re just an anime nerd, like me! They need you right now, but when they don’t, they’ll cast you out, like an otaku! You see, their morals, their code, it’s a bad joke. Dropped at the first sign of moe. They’re only as good as anime allows them to be. I’ll show you. When the chips are down, these… these 3DPDs, they’ll troll each other. See, I’m not a lolicon. I’m just ahead of the curve.

            this picture is funny because..
            a) the character can’t recognize a doghouse without a dog around
            b) there actually is a dog around
            c) both a and b
            d) none of the above

Sooooo… Ayumu really is a loophole character. If he walks like a girl, talks like a girl and acts like a girl, he’s a boy? I wonder what’s next on the anime scene?

Whether Ayumu acts like a boy or a girl isn’t really as important as the fact that the anime is sexualizing a middle school character. He shows more skin than everyone else, and everyone else is older than him.

It finally worked. It was pretty funny, but nothing will ever top this, a.k.a. the best AMV ever:

Anyway, I didn’t make it, so….. yeah. I couldn’t personally one-up your video, its one of the board members I used to know at Empty Movement.

I didn’t say you made– ah well, it doesn’t matter. But just for this, I’m doubly not watching Utena! Trying to slog through the slow, early episodes of Shiki actually. I always lose my place here.

It’s the most stirring, emotionally charged relationship in all of animu. May they continue elaborating in depth on the chemistry in this brocest.

Then, after reading the comments…I discover she’s a dude.

Sometimes I forget this is animu-rand!O boi, I’m so silly!

The only thing unique about this show are the cool character designs. (Too bad they’re on anime tropes.)

That aside, it’s a generic harem show, just even MORE boring because random peverted things don’t happen (like in Love Hina).
