Fall Rankings Week 5: Sinking into the depths

Just another typical day in the ocean. As always, I rank these shows by how much I’m looking forward to them week-by-week. In other words, this list is not meant to be an accurate reflection of how I would rate these shows’ quality, which is something I’d never be interested in doing anyway.

17. Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankeinai yo ne! (Prev: 18)
I always play one of the harem shows at 4x speed to see if anything crazy ever happens in one of them, but nah.

16. Little Busters (Prev: 12)
I wonder how Komari’s voice actress must feel since her performance is mostly composed of retarded grunts. Gwwwwaaa~ nyeeeeeeeh~ aaahhhhhheeee~ And somehow, I’m supposed to feel bad for Komari because there’s this deep, dark secret about her oniichan. Fucking oniichans, man. That’s all imoutos ever seem to care about when they don’t even know whether or not they’re truly an imouto. I would love it, however, if it turns out Komari is her own brother, so she slowly reverts back to being a boy throughout her arc. Then Riki can take Koma…uh, -ro out to the woods and give him the good Ol’ Yeller experience.

Ah, one can dream. But since this is a Key anime, the worst that would happen is that she’ll probably just mind break at some point. From the screencap above, this is already starting to happen.

15. K (Prev: 13)
Boring. #stillblue #whyamiusinghashtags

14. Robotics;Notes (Prev: 17)
Welp, if they could duplicate the last thirty seconds of every week into a full length episode, we’d actually have something intriguing to watch.

13. Magi (Prev: 14)
Our past two episodes have been about whether or not a clan should join an empire. Remember the movie Hero with Jet Li and how some people criticized it for being pro-totalitarian and such? Yeah, I sort of get the same vibes here when the baba-sama scolds her people into surrendering.

I sort of laughed when the princess told her bloodthirsty general that they can’t just conquer people; empires have to win the heart of the people too. Good luck with that. Anyway, the main character’s too powerful. The only suspense involves whether or not he’ll show up to save the day. Once he does, he just blows up swaths of enemies without breaking a sweat.

12. Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! (Prev: 9)
Yeah, yeah…!

That’s how Hamiltonian chaos in college was for me too. Hm, 50% was also our class average. What a coincidence!

11. CODE:BREAKER (Prev: 16)
The conspiracy goes all the way to the top! Code:Breaker agents answer only to the prime minister. Evil Diet members are kidnapping children and harvesting them for organs for their wheelchair-bound daughters. So what do they do with the body after they’ve gotten what they want anyway? Just dispose of them, right? No, that’s not evil enough. We have to keep them floating in jars.

What I find equally ridiculous is how the guys have no idea how to win until Miss Genius Shoujo points out that, “Gee, maybe we should attack these guys’ backpacks.” And in the backpacks? More confit of children:

The show’s plan is simple: give us villains so crazy evil that they justify the actions of the misanthropic hero. This way, even little kids can gaze up at him and whisper, “Thank… you for avenging… me… *bleh*” Such brave, resilient kids. I mean, they’ve been stuck in a cannister for God knows how long, but they still had the strength and mental composure to implore and thank the hero before dying!

10. Sukitte Ii na yo. (Prev: 8)

9. Zetsuen no Tempest (Prev: 7)
The storytelling continues to sink like a rock.

8. Kamisama Kiss (Prev: 10)
Your perfectly average show. Not offensive, but not terribly interesting either.

7. BTOOOM! (Prev: 5)

6. Shinsekai Yori (Prev: 2)
The longer we focus on the manrodents, the less I care.

5. Sword Art Online (Prev: 6)

4. Ixion Saga DT (Prev: 11)
Honestly, this show isn’t that bad. I mean, just look at this:

Marian’s fake backstory was great subversion, especially for anime. The majority of the general public seems to think that people only cross-dress or defy gender expectations as a result of some tragic, painful past or a deep-rooted psychological problem. So even though Kon was being rather transphobic this week, I didn’t mind the episode overall ’cause he gets his comeuppance… in a sense.

3. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures (Prev: 4)
JoJo unearthing the air pocket reminds me of my time playing Sonic. Yeah, that’s all I’ve got.

2. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (Prev: 3)

1. PSYCHO-PASS (Prev: 1)

This is so full of win.

Personally, I think it’s the terrible Voice acting, and the horrific direction in the Komari Route that’s killing Little Busters. And Komari’s voice…. WHY OH WHY? MAKE IT STOOOOPPP!!!!

    Ahem.

    Well, I think it’s heading to a Bad End….

I dunno, Rikki’s pretty annoying too. And so is Rin. And welp, that’s pretty much your top two characters.

Is this factoring in the most recent episode or Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun? I had a couple issues with that episode, and am curious as to whether or not this affects its current no.2 spot on your rankings.

Also, since when did you drop Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo?

If you mean the episode that just got subbed today, then no.

As for the misogynist pet anime, I just watch whatever I feel like for this list.

Y’know, I watched Hero raw in my first year of Mandarin in high school, so, actually, all I really know is that it looked cool and there were some really awesome-looking autumnal scenes involving leaves. And the dude cheated on the lady or something? This was a movie we totally could understand as first year Mandarin students.

When we were growing up and learning English, we read books like the Frog and the Toad and watched shows like Sesame Street. I know people usually don’t take a foreign language class until they’re already in high school, but watching Hero for the first year of Mandarin is like reading Tolstoy for your first year in Russian.

Personally, I’m liking Magi. I found a nice twist the fact that the oba-chan pushed the tribe to join the totally-not-mongolian empire, rather than the usual pride fight (which in shonen anime would have most likely ended with a not very realistic victory, rather than a total slaughter). I found it a very down to earth approach. Sometimes there really is no point in throwing away your life. The princess is an interesting character too. I kind of liked her already, but she seemed to me like she was too idealistic and naive, leaving her obviously treacherous general in command of the army and whatsoever. When she went back and he faced him, I was facepalming already. Then turns out she’s a F**KING BADASS and the only reason why she didn’t feel like worrying too much about leaving him alone with an army was because she believed she could take on that army single-handedly by herself. Granted, she needed some help from Aladdin in the end, but it still was very impressing. About the main character being overpowered, I wouldn’t worry too much for now. I think it’s mostly because we’re still at the beginning. If you had watched the first five episodes of One Piece you’d have gotten the same feeling, but it’s not like it stayed like that forever. This is a potential long-runner we’re talking about, so I guess we’ll get some serious challenge for Aladdin once he goes into Magi vs. Magi battles.

The historical problem here is that real empires are almost never as nice as what we see in Magi. So yeah, it’s pretty easy for the grandma to advocate assimilation when there’s absolutely no downside to it. This narrative, however, obscures the reality that empires often demand unfair tributes from their subjects, which is why people would resist in the first place. I guess my beef is more of an ideological one.

I’m just implying that there isn’t any suspense. I just kinda knew he would show up and own the day. If the princess had bit the dust, then y’know, that would’ve definitely surprised me.

Yeah, you’re right about the Empire thing – though what measure defines a tribute as “unfair” is debatable. You know, I guess I tend to see (maybe more) the downside of the opposite behaviour as well. Independentist movements which take pride only on the supposed tradition they are defending can be stupid and harmful; sometimes, if someone takes the first step towards integration, in 50-60 years no one remembers who’s the invader and who’s the invaded anymore (take the example of Greece with ancient Rome: Horace himself said that that Greece, being conquered, actually was the one to conquer Rome with its culture).

Yeah, had the princess died, that would have been a surprising twist – but that would make for an actually deconstruction show (just like Mami’s death in episode 3 of PMMM). I was satisfied enough with how things went; it looks like Magi is going to be a shonen which plays by the rules of the genre, but not a dumb one, at least for now. It’s a matter of taste then if one likes it or not; I will still enjoy much more both Jojo and HunterXHunter, but I think Magi can make for a nice, refreshing touch of almost childish fun for me.

I think you’re being a little dismissive of a group of people’s way of life. Sure, it’s easy in fiction to just assume nothing drastic will change, but in the real world, it’s adopting different laws and moral codes that you might not agree with, worshiping gods you might have no connection to, etc. For some people, these things are worth dying for. You mention the example of Rome and Greece, but it certainly helped that a lot of Greek mythology had been present on the Roman peninsula long before Rome ever rose to power. It’s a whole different thing when we have, say, Byzantine vs. the Ottomans.

Well, if one wants to make social/historical commentary, you’re right; I guess every situation is just different (also, yeah, I DO think that killing or dying for your god/s is a rather stupid thing to do). For example, current independentist movements in my country (Italy) are mostly ridiculous mixes of egotism (basically: we want to pay less taxes), fanatism, historical revisionism, and racial hate. Ok, let’s just say I didn’t get bad vibes from the anime, and I thought that the very fact that “the Empire” isn’t portrayed as ONLY evil (though while the Princess is good, her general shows us that there’s another side) was more original than anything else. It usually takes a much more pronounced trend to annoy me. Considering how Magi has had commentary on slavery and such, I don’t think it makes a point against personal freedom. Of course, the very concept of the Magi includes the idea of the existence of sovereigns who are chosen by higher powers, but I don’t think such an idea in a fantasy setting could be considered a statement on favour of absolute theocratic monarchies (though I’d consider it alarming IRL). For comparison, I was way more disturbed by Naruto (back when it was still somewhat watchable), where the good guys routinely send teens in military missions as mercenaries, and are even supposed to be more pacifist and morally superior to other villages which do… the same thing, really.

Well no, it’s not that I think shows like Magi are making any sort of explicit, political statement or anything. Rather, I think it’s just part of a pastiche that passively reflects a certain conservative ideology. At the same time, however, I haven’t deluded myself into thinking we need to rise up and protest this or anything. It’s simply food for thought.

So, did Kon lose his virginity or not?
I thought he was raped by Marian, lol.
But the narrator said that he didn’t lose his DT.
What the hell is DT to begin with?
