I don’t have anything to blog on Saturdays, so I’m gonna rag on this show until I get tired of it (which will probably be next week). So let’s get started. When we last left off, our shounen protagonist Enishiro had to become an online troll in order to pay his sister’s hospital bills. He just had to, okay? There was simply no other option. Unfortunately, she still died anyway, womp womp. Then to top it all off, his sister’s social media account became haunted, because that’s just a thing that happens in this universe. Enishiro then awakened to his powers, defeated the ghost, passed out after letting out one of those signature anime screams of anguish, and now we’re here.
Enishiro wakes up to find himself in a hot springs resort where nobody wears modern clothing. Then again, their powers come from their smartphones, so it’s a mishmash of themes, I guess. Tradition meets modernity! Only by striking a delicate balance between the old and the new can we truly repel the scourge of social media! Plus, this sets the stage for future fanservice. Can’t wait to see all these anime babes taking a bath! Woo!
As you might have guessed, our protagonist is special, ’cause he wields the blue demonic flame, oooh~ As a result, some people want him, but most don’t. A lot of the students here also know that Enishiro used to be an online troll, so he’s got that going against him. But I like said, he’s special, so he’s going to join up whether he wants to or not. Azaki, one of the senseis, thus reveals the truth to Enishiro: his sister didn’t simply succumb to her illness. She was actually slain by a bigger, even badder evil spirit than the one they fought last week. Apparently, it just goes around killing people who cling to life. Shouldn’t a whole bunch of people be dead in hospitals all across the world then? No, no, no, this only happens in Japan. Also, this only happens to sisters of special, little boys who can wield blue flames in order to motivate them to become a shounen protagonists. Don’t worry, it won’t happen to your grandpa. You’re not special.
Naturally, Enishiro gets triggered, because he loved his sister so much. He totally has to get revenge. But not before butting heads with Kasubata, because every shounen nowadays has to have two boys who are start out as semi-rivals but will become the bestest of buds if they would just put aside their differences. And the entire time he’s fighting Kasubata, Enishiro’s wears a smile even though he just found out his sister is dead like… literally a day ago. You know, the one family member he had left? The one person he wanted to save so badly that he became an online troll for? Grieve for her? Ain’t nobody got time for that. I’m a Japanese boy with powers! I gotta fight! And sure, it’s your prototypical generic sad superhero backstory but in anime form. But that’s why I find this whole thing so tasteless. Don’t fridge your sister just so you can set the stage for your generic ass shounen adventure. What is wrong with you?
There’s also this trend in shounen to have the characters dancing in the ED. C’mon, where’s the originality?
