- I guess these two will be our overarching villains. For ghosts, they’re not exactly fearsome.
- Apparently, Azaki is supposed to be drop-dead gorgeous. Women just can’t help but throw themselves at him. So even though Enishiro is on his first ever mission, his teacher abandons him. Great, there is literally no one to root for in this show. No one with a single redeeming quality. Even the adults are reprehensible.
- I like how this show is the direct opposite of every other horror-related fiction. I usually picture ghosts haunting places without technology. Think a cabin in the woods, derelict mines, an ancient castle, so on and so forth. A brightly lit store full of devices? Not remotely creepy. It doesn’t even work in a “oooh, this is a place that used to be full of people but now it’s empty” sort of way, i.e. a liminal space. It’s just a store.
- We quickly learn that all attackers have terrible personalities. Urususawa, in particular, is parasocial, so her weapon fires out goo that clings to people. Get it? Haha, so clever. But it kinda looks like she murdered Birdo.
- Moving along, Kasubata likes to bash things with a hammer, because he’s just a condescending prick all the time. Welp, what a winner of a concept: put a bunch of toxic kids together and have them fight the least scary, least threatening ghosts ever. I mean, this one just plain looks like a dick.
- Initially, Urususawa and Kasubata don’t let Enishiro do anything. They still fear his blue fire, so they have him stand off to the side while they exorcise all of the ghosts. Eventually, however, a “meaner” ghost rears its ugly head, and she quickly overwhelms the duo. Can you believe it? A ghost shows up that is specifically weak to Enishiro, thereby forcing the other two to have to team up with him. What a coincidence!
- So there are low level ghosts, mid level ghosts, and presumably high level ghosts. Basically, even ghost hunting has power levels. The trio shouldn’t be fighting anything above low level ghosts. Too bad their teacher is off having a foursome or whatever.
- Also, it turns out Enishiro’s blue flame can’t even hurt the living! So people were scared for nothing!
- Even though Urususawa was initially knocked out by the mid level ghost, she gets up when her fave content creator starts streaming. She is then enraged when he receives a superchat donation from someone other than her. At least the show is committing to the whole “everyone sucks here” gimmick. Still, it really is remarkable that none of our heroes are remotely endearing. Enishiro even has to admit that he did enjoy ragebaiting people.
- The toxic trio eventually takes down the mid level ghost, so all’s well that ends well, right? Of course, we get a cliffhanger where the sad boy ghost finally confronts Enishiro. Lemme guess, Enishiro is going to fly into a rage and attack the sad boy ghost recklessly? Azaki is going to show up at the last second to save the day?
- Ah, I dunno, I took up this show to fill a gap that I have on Saturdays, but I’m not sure that I can keep this up for much longer. This show is just so boring. The premise sucks. Why would you go and take something like ghosts and just suck out every ounce of creepiness from them? Every character is unlikable, too. Antiheroes are nothing new, but they should still have charismatic traits that make you want to root for them. Think Deadpool or Vegeta.
