Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 2: A short-lived reunion and a predictable departure

Gabby, the teeth girl, is the first to show up after Yuru finally has his Daemons. She then simply asks Yuru to join her. I feel like you need an explanation. Not even a good explanation, but just any explanation. You need to start off with, “Hey, so uh this might sound kinda crazy, but the villagers have been lying to you this entire time…?” Clearly, Yuru and his Daemons aren’t attacking on sight. So why not be a little a little less blase about this? Instead, when Yuru asks if Gabby and her people are responsible for the villagers’ deaths, she’s just all, “We sure are!” Just strikes me as kinda stupid. Maybe they sent the wrong person to do this job.

Elsewhere, Asa — the real Asa — tells granny that she’ll never forgive the old woman, but she doesn’t kill her. Why? Why go to all this length to murder most of the villagers but leave the (presumably) mastermind alive? She eventually catches up to Gabby, and I’m glad that Asa and Yuru are able to at least exchange a few more words. In fact, one of the Daemons even confirms that she’s his sister. So does Dera. Yuru doesn’t seem convinced despite these multiple confirmations, but in the interest of helping the few villagers who are left, he’s willing to back off for now. Asa is also fine with this result, because it means he’s safe? That’s all she really needed? I mean, I feel like you could’ve gotten that same information with a whole lot less effort — a whole lot less murderin’. Whatever the villagers were guilty of, was it really punishable by death? But somehow granny gets to live? She’s even putting the barrier back up. We didn’t even finish off fake Asa either (who’s likely a Daemon if you think about it). Meh. Whatever happens to Yuru from here on out, I feel like a whole lot of people died for nothing while the true culprits pretty much got away with it.

This is where we gradually introduce the factions in contention, I guess. It’s a decidedly less exciting, less action-packed episode. Dera meets up with a cranky Hana, who will drive Yuru and his Daemons down the mountain. Granny told them to hide in the world down below, but what does this entail, exactly? Well, the worst possible option is to have Yuru become an everyday student who has to attend school everyday. But y’know, this is anime… Meanwhile, Asa and Gabby are greeted by Jin, who is a member of the Kagemoris… whatever that means. A very important family, clan, or organization, I’m sure. The girls proceed to have a chat with him as if they hadn’t just murdered half a village. It’s one of those shows where characters can take countless lives and just be fine afterwards. They can have a casual chat on a bench as if was just any other day. Death ain’t no big thing. Nor do they seem all too concerned about their side having any survivors. They’re more bothered with potentially being punished for failing to take Yuru in. I’m not sure how I feel about that. The killing thing is what bugs me the most. Again, whether those villagers were guilty or not, a life is still a life, y’know?

As night falls, Yuru starts taking in the sights of his new world. It must be crazy for him to see all these bright lights for the first time. I’m surprised he’s not having a breakdown of sorts. Everything he’s ever known — the nature of reality itself — has been shattered. His only family might not be his family. Some strange girl claims to be his sister. Are his parents possibly still alive? Granny and the villagers have been lying this whole time. His best friend might be dead. He’s going to have to learn what a bidet is! This should be a mindfuck. A complete and total mindfuck. But who knows? Maybe we’ll get a delayed reaction in the next episode.

Stray thoughts & observations:

— The OP does nothing for me.

— Well, teeth girl is pretty defenseless without dem chompers.

— Great, the kiddos are safe! They just have massive trauma from this event, but at least they’re alive!

— No point in going back to the village, Dera says. They already know how to find the village and penetrate the barrier, he adds. So I guess those broken families will just pick up the pieces and trudge on. I feel bad for the kids. They got all that PTSD for nothing. Still kept in the dark, still forced to live in a world without modern conveniences for some bizarre reason.

— Yuru’s Daemons are naturally fascinated with technology. It’s been over 400 years since they left the mountains, so they’ve obviously never seen a car before. Wait till they get brain-rotted by social media!

— On their way down the mountain, a female Daemon atop a horse suddenly appears and starts chatting it up with Yuru’s Daemons. Yuru is shocked and suspicious of a car, but thinks nothing of a woman riding a magical, levitating steed? Apparently, she’s “a legit god on a whole other level from your average Daemon.”

— Elsewhere, a couple of soldiers find themselves walking in circles. I guess once the barrier’s up, no one can enter or leave. So what now? Entreat the villager you just killed decimated for help? Good luck with that.

— The ED does nothing for me.

The pigtail girl killing those people so ruthlessly in episode one also really rubs me the wrong way goven how I’m getting the feeling in episode 2 that I’m not supposed to hate her. The OP and ED indicate she is an important character as well. But I really do hate her.
