A new guest has arrived, and Claude acknowledges that he’s a “hyena following the scent of blood.” Basically, he knows that this guy is up to no good. So how did it all go so wrong in the other timeline? I guess not forming a connection with Athanasia meant Claude could easily be manipulated. Did he become a shell of a man who proceeded to go through the motions? Well, we’ll probably never find out. That was then, and this is now.

This week’s episode sheds some light on the strange alternate universe our characters inhabit. For instance, there’s a tragic lack of children running around. According to Sanda, there are only 50,000 kids under the age of 15. As a result, adults are deferential to children. Odd. We even learn later that kids can straight up kill an adult and it won’t be considered a crime. This is a world where Japan’s (and maybe the whole world’s) birth rate has completely plummeted, so children are treated as national treasures. But why has it plummeted? Is it due to personal choice? Probably not. Adults wouldn’t be coddling these kids if adults are simply choosing not to have babies. I think it’s more likely that something has damaged humanity’s ability to reproduce. But that’s still just speculation.

Sure, that’s one punch, but where’s the second punch? And third? And fourth? Unfortunately, before we get to see Scarlet punch a bunch of slave traders and owners, we gotta first figure out the location of the auction. Which is what I thought we did last week at the end of the second episode, but apparently not. The middleman merely gets Scarlet in touch with another slave owner by the name of Zatharin, and she needs his help to actually attend the auction. Ugh, fine. Let’s drag this out a little.

Kannawa’s still struggling to ask Kamegawa out to lunch. In my head, I would just send my mentee a Slack message along the lines of, “Hey, wanna grab lunch. We can discuss your role, current project, and answer any questions and concerns you might have.” Sure, this doesn’t have the personal touch of a face-to-face request, but uh, why does a work lunch between team members need a personal touch anyway? The only reason why she’s having so much trouble with this is because she’s ironically not being professional about it. If it’s a boy-girl thing, i.e. a date, sure, asking him out is awkward. But between a mentor and a mentee, what’s the problem? If they were both the same gender, would this still be difficult for her?
