My Awkward Senpai Ep. 7: Adults struggling with adulting

At the start of this week’s episode, Kannawa tries to tell Kamegawa to retrieve her phone through a variety of hand gestures. When he predictably fails to interpret her flailing movements, she finally opens the glass doors to tell him directly what she wants. Why didn’t she just do that from the start? Well, this is just one of the many examples of Kannawa and her kouhai struggling to be proper adults:

My Awkward Senpai Ep. 6: Kannawa’s most awkward night so far

Ah yes, it’s time for the obligatory festival episode, so you know what that means: girls wearing yukata (only girls allowed, though!), everyone enjoying grub from all the food stalls, and last but not least, we can’t forget about the fireworks. We even get a scene where Kannawa burns herself eating takoyaki! How does an adult woman get this far in life without knowing how to eat hot food?! Well, not to be a Debbie Downer, but I can’t help but feel as though I’m watching a high school romance series. But that’s not entirely fair now, is it? There’s no reason why two adults can’t go to a festival together. And it’s not even just two adults, because this episode introduces a whole new character. Nevertheless, every time I watch this show, I ask myself, “What makes this different from a high school romance series?” And truthfully, I can’t really give you a good answer. Kannawa and Kamegawa might be working adults, but they often act like children.

My Awkward Senpai Ep. 5: Two idiots risk their lives for an office job

A typhoon is headed their way, so Kannawa wonders if she should tell her mentee to even come to work. Uh, no? There’s no way in hell you would find me in the office if there’s a typhoon warning. Not only that, the weather forecast is literally telling people to stay home. I think it’s wild to put work over your own personal safety, especially when you’re just a grunt in the office. If your bosses can’t understand that, you’re probably working for a black company. But as she leaves her apartment, the “camera” lingers on the umbrella she has left behind. Y’see, you can’t have a doki doki “let’s share an umbrella” moment if you don’t go to work and risk your life!

My Awkward Senpai Ep. 4: Just a casual business trip

Kannawa and Kamegawa are on a business trip, so we get all the familiar tropes. For instance, we make the classic blunder of reserving only one room for the two young, attractive professionals! Oh, what are we to do! We can’t possibly share a room together (even though it has two twin beds)! That would be so inappropriate! Unless… well, if this had been a hentai, I’m sure Kannawa and Kamegawa would be banging like rabbits, declare their love for each other, and have babies after. Make the late Shinzo Abe proud, kids! But this isn’t a hentai, so they stay up gaming all night instead. To her credit, Kannawa does get Kamegawa to stick around. He initially was planning to slum it overnight at a manga cafe instead. Why him and not Kannawa? I dunno, senpai privilege?

My Awkward Senpai Ep. 3: Girlfailure

Kannawa and Kamegawa are asked to plan an after work drinking party. Someone in the office is getting married, so everyone wants to celebrate. Drinking is… not my thing. If you wanna do an after work dinner with the team, I’m all for it. I’m not the most social person, but bribe me with some good food and even I can force myself to hold a conversation. Getting drunk and feeling drunk, however, is not my jam. I actually lucked out on this front. A lot of Asians get really flushed after drinking alcohol. It’s a genetic thing. During my freshman year in college, my friend wanted to go out with a bang on everyone’s last day in the dorms. Well, one can of beer was enough to have him writhing in misery. I don’t have that problem. I can drink as much as I want. I just never want to be “under the influence.” But enough about that.
