The Fated Magical Princess: Who Made Me a Princess Ep. 7

Athanasia has upgraded to being able to cast spells, but they’re not very effective. She essentially has little to no control over them. Her frustration boils over, and Lucas ends up in her crosshairs. I can’t exactly blame her, because like all the tutors before him, he doesn’t seem like a very effective teacher either. All he ever says over and over is that she needs to figure things out herself. Sure, that could work, but then what exactly is he here for? Anyone could’ve told her that same piece of advice. Moreover, this is why they often say the best athletes typically don’t make the best coaches. I’m not sure if this is true, but you can sorta understand the logic. Things come so easily to them, so they can’t understand their students’ struggle. And right now, Lucas isn’t being very sympathetic to Athanasia. She hits the nail on the head, which somehow riles him up.

SPY x FAMILY Ep. 41: Taking a breather

After Loid’s heavy-hitting backstory, we’re back to one-off stories that can be wrapped up in about half an episode, i.e. this is normally what we’ve come to expect from SPY x FAMILY. For now, this is fine; the show is giving viewers a bit of a breather, especially if last week’s episode hit you in the feels. It certainly did for me. But now that we know the heights that the show can achieve — deeply personal drama in the flashback or pure hilarity in the movie — it would be disappointing if another major chapter doesn’t surface soon. For instance, I think the second season suffered from waiting too long before giving us the arc on the cruise ship. It also had nothing follow up Yor’s intense mission, so the last few episodes fell flat. In any case, it helps that this week’s first one-off story gives Sylvia an opportunity to reflect back on her experience training Loid. In a way, we’re getting a very minor, light-hearted extension to his backstory.

Sanda Ep. 4: Identity crisis

Yaguida and his ilk are after Santa not because the jolly fat man is evil, but because they don’t want the figure of legend to give kids hope. That’s right, this fictional society coddles kids so much that we’ve looped right back to being horribly abusive. So how does this logic even work? Well, kids need to follow their marching orders. In other words, learn what we tell you to learn, marry whom we tell you to marry, do whatever job we tell you to do. But if they have hope, they might push back on said orders. They might try to achieve their own dreams and ends, and thus not do what the government tells them to do. If you want to be charitable, you could argue that the world is in such a precarious situation that it’s all hands on deck. If kids start acting out, the whole house of cards will come tumbling down. Basically, crushing kids’ hopes and dreams is just a necessary evil.

I don’t know why Julius has to be like this. When Scarlet’s besties were talking about the prospects of getting married one day, she instantly thought of him. Basically, he all but has Scarlet’s heart in his hands. He could seal the deal right now. All he has to do is stop being a troll. But the troublesome prince couldn’t resist himself. I suppose it’s just his nature. Like how Scarlet can’t stop clobbering people, Julius can’t stop riling her up. Maybe it’s even deeper than that. Maybe Julius’s afraid that commitment would make their relationship boring — that them being lovey-dovey would make her less interesting. Well, heavens forbid, we can’t let the prince be bored! But seriously, when you think about it, he’s another spoiled prince like his brother. Julius is certainly not nasty and cruel like Kyle, so at least he has that going for him. This guy has obviously never been put in his place. So if Scarlet does sock him at the start of next week’s episode, I can’t even be mad. He deserves it. Naturally, I’d personally punch him for different reasons. Remember folks, no kings.

My Awkward Senpai Ep. 4: Just a casual business trip

Kannawa and Kamegawa are on a business trip, so we get all the familiar tropes. For instance, we make the classic blunder of reserving only one room for the two young, attractive professionals! Oh, what are we to do! We can’t possibly share a room together (even though it has two twin beds)! That would be so inappropriate! Unless… well, if this had been a hentai, I’m sure Kannawa and Kamegawa would be banging like rabbits, declare their love for each other, and have babies after. Make the late Shinzo Abe proud, kids! But this isn’t a hentai, so they stay up gaming all night instead. To her credit, Kannawa does get Kamegawa to stick around. He initially was planning to slum it overnight at a manga cafe instead. Why him and not Kannawa? I dunno, senpai privilege?
