Seikon no Qwaser Ep. 3 – Jerks Are Bad Too

For once, just once, I want to see a main character of a harem show actually hate someone, (who they don’t consider a rival or didn’t kill their father, etc.) I also want to see a main character who is completely unfazed or almost angry at the random perverted things that always happen. That’d be great, honestly. Someone who actually doesn’t blush at all of that crap and act all stupid about it. It can’t be impossible to have an actual different harem lead, right? — KizukuKanshi

Be careful what you wish for.

As far as I’m concerned, KizukuKanshi just described Sasha pretty well.

Hate is pretty strong so why don’t we use dislike instead. In that case, Sasha does dislike these girls plenty and they haven’t killed his father or anything:

The only time he blushed this episode was when Tomo paid him a non-sexual compliment. Otherwise, Sasha’s always walking in on naked girls, groping them for no reason whatsoever and never seems fazed by any of it:

There you go… a different harem lead. Is it because he isn’t Japanese that he gets to act this way while every other harem lead is wimpy and emotional? What’s even funnier is that he’s such a wish-fulfillment fantasy for manchildren. His daily routine pretty much consists of groping women, insulting women, and coming to the rescue of those women he just insulted.  For good measure, he probably insults them afterward too like their “soma” was too cold and it made his lance a little flabby. Unless, of course, it’s the retarded pair of walking boobs Tomo; you don’t dare mistreat her.

Oh, Sasha’s even a really smart. Who would’ve guessed!

What kind of person actually wishes he could be Sasha? “Heh, I wish I could suck tits and put dem hos in their place like my man Sasha!!”

When Sasha’s not being abnormally cool and apathetic to outsiders, he’s always emo-ing it up in his lonesome.

I guess we’re supposed to feel sorry for him. I guess we’re supposed to excuse his asshole nature because he had to crawl through tough Russian winters and Napoleon can attest to what a pain in the ass that is.

And the thing is… Sasha’s abhorrent behavior is rewarded.

“I BET HE LIKES YOU TEEHEE. HE ALWAYS SAVES YOU.”

So uh… do normal people just let others die. “Sorry, I only had a crush on you in fifth grade but I grew out of it. I would have saved you back then though!”

Anyhow, Mafuyu then blushes as if she has any reason to like him, but she totally can’t show it because she’s such a tsundere firecracker herself. So of course, Tomo then asks if Mafuyu likes Sasha instead, and despite the fact that Sasha has treated her with almost contempt up until this point, Mafuyu doesn’t laugh derisively at the suggestion. She just gets all embarrassed like the good tsunderekko that she is. But why? Why is there “a spring in [Mafuyu’s] step ever since Sasha arrived?” Tomo suggests that Mafuyu’s finally back to normal: “Like you did before Father disappeared…”

Welp, there you go. Go find some tsunderekko with daddy issues, insult her boobs and she’s all over you. She’ll make you borscht out of love. Thanks anime!

In other developments, some loli just arrived with a giant copper doll and proceeds to dominate Hana.

I guess she’s the next big, bad boss. Oh boy.

  1. I guess that is about what my wish comes to, huh? Hmm….Well, dreams and wishes aren’t dreams and wishes when they come true, I guess. o.O

I’m intrigued now, though. Currently, I’m not in the mood to wade through a bunch of fanservice to get to one character, but still, I might try later.

Well, the first release of every episode is hilariously censored. When he’s checking out their breasts, the camera is zoomed into their necks instead so it makes it seem like he has a neck fetish.

      1. Oh yeah! I forgot about the whole DVD peddling thing they’re doing nowadays. As long as whatever’s going on still makes sense, then it’s fine by me.

  2. I don’t watch Seikon no Qwaser and frankly I’m not interested, but your description of Sasha is more close to the shoujo male lead than the romantic shounen/seinen male lead. Shoujo male leads usually are jerks, and even sociophats (shoujo smut mangas), but the female lead loves him because he “protects her”. I met girls who actually enjoy Seikon no Qwaser because “Sasha is hot”. Maybe girls love jerks.

Nevertheless I’m not interested in this show.

    1. Huh? I thought the point of Shoujo male leads are ‘We’ll beat each other up for the first half, try to out-tsun each other and throw in some slap slap kiss at the end’.

  3. That loli is another Aya Hirano role brought to you by Aya Hirano. Is there anything she isn’t in?

Although I can’t see why Sasha is a wish fulfillment per se since he’s quite clearly a rip off of Cloud Strife. And quite a few males out there hate the guy for his constant albeit justified whining.

      1. That is one complaint about FF7 that always confused me. Didn’t he spend more time not caring? Not caring =/= whining.

As for the comment above involving women like jerks, I can actually vouch for that. A lot of girls I know say they don’t like jerks but date them anyways because those jerks are often big and “protect them”. I really wish it weren’t true. Growing up in a Christian community, I was pretty much told to submit to my husband and that if a man didn’t want me, I failed as a woman and human being.

Still weirded out by this show and not interested but your overviews are worth reading.

Well, I know these girls exist and I’m not saying they don’t but I still stand by what I said earlier:

I can’t imagine this is true for any well-adjusted woman.

It’s the 21st century. If a girl likes an asshole who insults her everyday just for some ‘protection,’ she has issues, her society has issues, or both. I particularly dislike the “girls like jerks” excuse because it’s often bandied by passive-aggressive “nice guys” who claim they can’t get any girls based on some stereotype.

        2. Emoing, moping, not caring, whining call it what you will. But the point is I can’t see how men can willingly be in the mood to project their fantasies onto Sasha as for one thing those types of characters are not very well liked. I remember there were quite a few male FF7 fans who got sick to death of Cloud to the point where they thought ‘STFU about your life problems and get to the freaking boss fight!’

Or am I merely judging him from the experiences with the wrong crowd and not the males it was supposed to be aimed at? (Otakus).

          1. I played the game. I’m just saying I don’t think he was emoing, moping, not caring, whining, etc. And considering the vitriol out there for JRPGs in general, I don’t think those opinions can be considered as any sort of unbiased authority.

But the point is I can’t see how men can willingly be in the mood to project their fantasies onto Sasha as for one thing those types of characters are not very well liked.

You’re focusing too much on his “whiny” past which isn’t so much a factor here. I’m referring more to his breast groping, women insulting nature which is clearly being played off as comedy. When he walked up to Miyuri, grabbed her boobs and called them flabby, I don’t get the feeling from the anime that we should condemn such actions. I get the feeling that the anime expects us to stand up and go “Aw snap son, he told her.” The anime expects us to root for Sasha. We’re expected to identify with him. If the anime didn’t think such a character would be likeable, they wouldn’t portray in such a way.

  4. About the “girls love jerks” comment, I was making reference to the “bad boy” trope rather than a social comentary. Females fantasies are equally disturbing than male fantasies but there is a diference between reality and fantasy. I don’t think that every guy who enyojed Transformers 2 is a misogynistic and retarded pig and I don’t think that every woman that enjoy the “bad boy” trope wants to be treated like trash by a powerful man.

But there’s no argument here. Of course not every women who enjoys the “bad boy” trope wants to be mistreated in real life. Not every person who watches rape porn wants to go out and rape people. This doesn’t really get us anywhere. My point is that if you see someone being mistreated and you enjoy it (or even act blase about it), fantasy or not, then you’re not well-adjusted. Yeah, sure, our bodies are wired differently and some people get sexual kicks out of things that are taboo, but we have a rational mind for a reason and we should be able to transcend those shortcomings.

        1. Unless they commit a crime, pose a danger to themselves or the people around them, no. People can live their lives however they like. They’re also open to criticism, however.

  5. Well, in the case of Sasha, him saving someone all the time might actually mean he likes them, because he’s such a raging jerk that he’d probably not bother to save someone of no merit it to himself whatsoever. So I suppose its not a wholly incomprehensible charge, although it could just as easily be that she is of utility to him in some manner.

Yeah, not watching this show… I was gonna check the first episode originally, but then I re-thought the whole breast milk thing and decided against torturing myself.

This is plausible. I doubt Tomo had considered this, however. Had anyone else said it, maybe. Tomo? Nah.

      1. Yeah, I was gonna say something about Tomo being too retarded to have used this line of thinking, but figured it was implicit.

Sasha’s the kind of guy I’d only be interested in to fuck his lights out and make him cry, then make him do a walk of shame in his boxers only. I’d make him tsundere for me and then move on to someone else and laugh at him while he cried.

        Uh… I mean… I have perfectly healthy desires and fantasies…

  6. ‘Seikon no Qwaser’ is (one of) the worst series of the last season. Leaving aside the euphemisms (fanservice, ecchi, etc), this series can only be described as PORN. That is the kinda crap that makes me ashamed to like Anime.

  7. why do you guys hate “moe” so much? So just because anime fans look at little anime kids that makes them some type of predator? I like looking at Sakura Kinomoto pictures, does that make me a cradle robber? no. We american anime fans are too quick to judge things. Also we american fans have to remember that big eyes in anime is nothing new, it’s been around since anime first started.
