The cast just continues to balloon.
Here are the guys of Glittering Crux:
Here are the (mostly) ladies of Glittering Crux:
Wait, we’re not done yet. We can’t forget the good guys (and animal):
Good Lord. Can you name each and everyone of them off the top of your head (let’s not forget that the members of Glittering Crux also have nicknames, e.g. Scarlet Kiss)?
I want to borrow a gimmick from one of RedLetterMedia’s reviews: describe any of the Star Driver characters without saying what they look like, what they wear, what they do in the anime or what their abilities/powers are. Pretend as if you’re trying to describe the character to a friend who has never seen Star Driver before.
Well, this week, we get twins. It’s like the writers got together and decided (presumably right after the “make everyone wear underwear on the outside” meeting), “We don’t have enough characters! In fact, they’re too unique and distinctive! Gimme more characters! MOAR! MAKE THEM LOOK THE SAME EVEN!”
(Quick summary: We meet a pair of twins. One of them is a Glittering Crux member. The non-Glittering Crux twin might have developed a crush on Takuto. Glittering Crux attacks Takuto to assess his abilities. He kicks ass. We end with the revelation that ditzy twin is one of the island’s maidens. Whee.)
But it looks like they’re already running out of ideas for the mechas– I’m sorry, cybodies. That black hulking thing above is pretty uninspired looking. Ah, whatever, it’s not like it posed any challenge to Takuto. Let’s talk about anime asses.
Yeah, that’s right. Asses. A bird outside the window is taunting my girlfriend’s cat by shaking its ass back and forth so it made me really think. You can always find inspiration in nature — isn’t that right, Zach?
And there certainly seemed to be no shortage of anime asses this week.
But who had the superior posterior this week? Kuranosuke certainly didn’t win the genetic lottery:
Some asses sparkle to make up for their lack of curvature, but they seem to have directional limitations.
While other asses may not be as shiny, they can go left, right and possibly even up and/or down:
Needless to say, both Star Driver and Panty & Stocking* episodes this week were the bottoms for their respective series. Yawn.
*Panty & Stocking is a comedy, right? That’s what I kept asking myself this week. Scanty and Kneesocks are fine as foils the first time they showed up, but each subsequent appearance of theirs is just a rehash of the first. And don’t even get me started on the “Ghost” mini-episode.

I use this when watching (and after watchin) Star Driver:

As for the RedLetterMedia test I think I could probably do it for a fair number of the main characters. I’m not sure I could tell you what is likeable about them but I’m sure I could describe Takuto, Sugata, Watanabe (the through the glass chick), Benio (aka Scarlett Kiss). Though generally it’s just a gimmick or two that makes them describable. I actually welcome the expanding cast especially Mizuno the west maiden was a lot of fun in comparison to the character I couldn’t describe, Wako, who is just a whole heap of boring and 1 dimension to me.
Well, I intended the gimmick thing to apply to more than just the main characters (I maintain, however, that Wako has no personality). Supporting players should still be fleshed out characters. Why do we keep adding villains if the last few are barely interesting? What can I say about the nurse other than she’s really into boys? That chart you linked is useful, but the anime shouldn’t need one. It’s one thing if the villains are just one-episode characters, but they’re recurring.
Mizuno feels like she’s being used to tease out Wako’s jealousy. I mean, it’s just a guess and I could be wrong, but whenever a girl shows up and starts fawning over the main character, she’s usually there to make the original girl question her feelings.
yeah that is true Mizuno is probably just there to make Wako jealous. Though the only notable indication jealousy in this last episode was Wako’s reaction (which we don’t actually see) to hearing they were in the bathroom together. I’m just hoping (most likely in vain) that it’s not the case as she brings a lot of energy back to the cast.
I can’t decide yet if the villains are going to be a dime a dozen or some are going to return. (They did get the technology to repair cybodies in this episode) Since it’s going to be at minimum 25 episodes, we might have recurrence of some of the villains.
Wanna try that RedLetterFormat on every male lead you can think of and see how many phrases overlap?
Clueless and shy about girls and their sentiments, friendly, outgoing, not too bright in general, will stop on a dime to help anyone in need (even if this means jumping onto a delicate tree branch to catch a fucking crow)… that about describes everyone!
