Hanasaku Iroha Ep. 3: After school special edition

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame.

It turns out Mr. Famous Novelist isn’t very famous and has to write perverted stuff to make ends meet. When our wide-eyed heroine stumbles on his secret, he ties her up. Don’t get the wrong idea — it’s all for the sake of his craft! Hm, yes, this is a reasonable thing to do with a 16 year old girl. Somehow Ohana isn’t too nonplussed by her predicament.

Creepers gonna creep.

It isn’t long until everyone else at the hot springs inn finds out what’s going on, leading to a wild car chase (the entire inn staff came along for some reason), a botched attempted suicide, and Nako to the rescue. Oh how unexpected and wild — I am at the edge of my seat. Y’see, diving headfirst into the water is like a complete 180 from how she normally acts and this amazes and shocks us (not really). As a result, wet t-shirt shot!

She hasn’t had any character development whatsoever so it just doesn’t work. Just suddenly throwing a curveball without establishing the fastball doesn’t fool anyone; it’ll just be hammered into the stands.

All’s well that ends well, right? Perverted novelist is still emoing it up so Ohana launches into a vomit-inducing impassioned speech about how he’s so talented even if he’s writing smut about young girls — oh God, I feel like I’m watching some lame family dorama but without half the charm and camp. Cue up the solemn piano track! Kiddies, there are always lesson to learn every single day!

At the end of it all, Nako and Ohana become fwweeeends~ yay. Minko is still a bitch though, ho hum. Feeling that “Die!” didn’t quite get the job done, she has picked up ‘balut’ as an insult. Does anyone still think she’s a mature character? C’mon, really?

She’s so adorable in her hate, uguu~! Hardcore Minko apologist for life!

So, she is calling Ohana a “half-fermented duck egg”?

Okay? I dunno if there will be salt involved, but whatever. XD

I’m glad that Ohana’s abduction and sexual assault was treated as being comical and utterly non-threatening. We need more melodramatic soap-operas to suddenly change gear, telling us how violence against women isn’t really a big deal and can actually be quite charming.

The best part is how a sizeable amount of viewers have seen this as a positive turning-point for the series. I know I wasn’t convinced until the strong female character told her would-be rapist how talented he is.

No, y’see, he saw things about her even she didn’t know! That totally makes up for the creepy bondage and sexual fantasies.

That’s true, I bet she had no clue that she was a whore who was unconciously asking for it by walking around with cute flowers in her hair and working unaccompanied in an unsecured area.

Honestly, given how utterly unbearable Nako had been to this point, I was thrilled to see her dive off the cliff. But of course she reverted to regular form after the fact… and we got a cheesecake shot, too!

What was impressive, though, truly, was how quickly Ohana went from being compete to being completely braindead.

This show sucks. And I’m tired to people telling me that I just need to lower my expectations and that’ll make it wonderful. Dropped.

The Nako thing just didn’t register with me; I didn’t even raise an eyebrow when it felt like it should’ve been a major development in her character. It’s should have made me think “Damn, finally, a breakthrough.” But her character has had no development so I’m just “Whatever.”

The previews with “Minchi’s real popular with boys!” doesn’t give me much hope.

Oh, I didn’t even last through the ED to the preview. What. A. Tragedy. I found the whole “everyone says a line from the next ep” thing to be intriguing when done by Angel Beats, but now I’m just bored with it. It worked better for that show, anyway, regardless of how deeply flawed that one was as well.

Oh I stream anime for the rest of the crew (even if they never update, I bounce thoughts off of them) here to watch. I can’t do this alone, I just can’t! Anyhow, this usually means I get to sit through multiple EDs and the worst of shows. Bad anime are fun to trash with friends.

This episode will either break the series, what with its inconsistencies and horribly unrealistic personalities/reactions, or it’ll simply be forgotten.
Good to see I wasn’t the only one disappointed that nobody acted like they had a brain.

Everything was kinda surreal, especially the smut factor. Okay, the fantasy scenes are a given, but the way Ohana struggled in her ropes and that screencap I took of Nako after she emerged from the water… it’s like, really? Really?

I didn’t notice how bad that screen was until you pointed it out. That’s just… yeah. Why?

Nonetheless, my confidence is shaken, but not quite gone. Probably too optimistic, but I ashamedly let needless optimism get the best of me.

Well, if we really wanted to find a silver lining, there’s a lot worse out there. I really can’t find anything positive to say about Astarotte no Omocha! for example.

Nor can I. I promised myself I’d follow at least one guaranteed mediocre/awful series this season so I could broaden my horizons some and realize what doesn’t make things work, but… I just can’t.

Hell, I can’t even bother watching it to give commentary.

I’m still waiting until the next episode till I can declare myself right on thinking it would devolve into the same empty lack of a point as any other show without a clear direction or plot. Then again, they’re just going to go to school, anyway. Oh how fun that will be.

I haven’t declared anything about the entire series as a whole yet. I still stand by my statements at the start of the season that this could be a solid show if it wasn’t over the top. Well, this episode was pretty over the top, but I’m tuning in still. You need a few more major stinkers like this one to turn me away. Shit, I finished Kampfer for Christ’s sakes.

The next 9~21 episodes will be Ohana struggling to come to terms with PTSD , her complete unravelling and loss of autonomy, dignity -think flaking out on work, self harm to funny panty shots from fainting spells! Eventually abandoned by her uncaring extended family she is institutionalised and put on suicide watch until that boy from episode 1 comes back and fixes [penetrates] her.

    THE END (?)

best of both worlds: you let the ideological narrative go to its logical extreme while still keeping it friendly for the viewers at home. young women wetting themselves in public is moe. so is the flash of wrist tissue! women are commodities defined by their sexuality, to be destroyed and built up by the will of men.
