Quick Fall Impressions, Week 2

Maybe I’ll make this a weekly thing since there are a lot of shows this season that really don’t deserve a full-fledged post. Or, rather, I just can’t muster up 500 words for each of them. Either way, let’s get started.

Kimi to Boku Ep. 2: Girls can be jerks too
This week’s episode continues the “Everyone’s a jerk” trend. Shun tries to be nice by helping out some midget girl, but this just tweaks her Napoleonic complex. As a result, the girl begins to torment and bully the wimpish Shun until his friends decide to step in. Somehow though, taking down the sprite is harder than it looks. Things don’t go well for our gang of four until the girl goes too far and draws blood from one of the cross-eyed twins.

This gets Shun into mega-mad mode, allowing him to muster up the ability to finally, uh… if you want to call this confronting the girl, be my guest. In any case, it turns out the midget is just a mega-tsundere (gee, how original) for Shun and so this excuses all of her previous bitchiness in the episode. Hey, girls are just allowed to abuse you as long as they feel doki-doki on the inside. ‘Cause it’s cute. Or something. I don’t know; I think it’s all kind of sick.

On a separate note, Kimi to Boku really needs to work on its timing. I know it isn’t a comedy series like Nichijou, but it’s not as if the anime doesn’t attempt any jokes whatsoever. It does; it just also happens to be really bad at it. Here, I’ll just let Fin describe it: “All the punchlines just kind of flop over and twitch a couple of times then die.” But keep up the good fight, Kimi to Boku, ’cause you were probably the best anime I watched tonight… for whatever that’s worth.

Gundam AGE Ep. 1: I heard you like Mega Man Legends so I…

Artist! Come… I’ve got a commission for you. I want a Photoshop an oil painting of a flying robot on my wall. Yes…

*swirl glass of Mountain Dew*

…this would go perfectly in my mansion.

Is it just me or is the art direction really reminiscent of Mega Man? Anyway, yeah, this is probably for children and I should just stop watching right now. I mean, anime isn’t normally nuanced anyway, but Gundam AGE is clearly aiming for a different, younger crowd altogether. Gundam Wing was all dull politics with some shipping potential sprinkled in here and there. Gundam 00 was a good example of how the Rumsfeld Doctrine might work if everyone in the world was incredibly stupid. Gundam AGE, on the other hand, is like a little kid’s wildest dreams.

Aw man, really? I get to build and pilot robots?

Teachers just don’t understand! Arrrrrgh!

I’m totally gonna fight the evil aliens from outer space! Anyway, Gundam AGE isn’t without some inspiring-looking shots like this one, but the rest of the anime isn’t enough to keep my attention.

Ben-Ki or Maken-To Ep. 1: I don’t even know anymore

Generic fighting nonsense. Sure, Maken-Ki is arguably worse for all its panty-shottin’, breasts-bouncin’ gratuity, but it’s all the same in the end: hot, sexy girls fighting for reasons I don’t give two shits about. Enjoy the physical abuse, I guess.

C3 Ep. 2: Faux Shaft

This screenshot has not been edited in any way.

No amount of aping another studio’s style is going to cover up the poor animation and generic comedy hijinks plaguing C3. And I don’t even care for Shaft anymore. The second episode is a schizophrenic juxtaposition of banal slice-of-life school bits against a fight scene where I have no rooting interest for any of the participants whatsoever. Seriously, why should I care whether or not Fear gets destroyed?

And the anime tries to be dark, but with the high school students suddenly flipping around and about like Mighty Mouse, it’s hard to gauge whether or not the show’s characters are truly in deep trouble at any point in the episode. You need limitations to have tension, but we don’t know anything about the characters’ skills and abilities yet. As a result, the good guys can pull anything out of their asses to win a fight. Case in point, the meganekko turns into a katana out of nowhere. Right now, I’m just kind of watching stuff happen on screen.

Thanks for for giving Gundam Age the the ultimate compliment by comparing it to Megaman, Megaman Legends even. I’m watching this one definitely. Thanks for the recommendation.

Are you kidding? It’s an amazing game. Megaman Legends is about fighting robots and pirates and searching for treasure. The robots he fights in the ruins are huge, menacing machines. It’s really fun.

Ben-To is the biggest surprise for me this season. I thought it would be another braindead harem/fanservice show, but it was actually funny, the scene where the guys life passed before him was hysterical, and the one where the store erupts into mortal combat over marked down bentos had me laughing. it even had a joke about there NOT being a panty shot.
I couldn’t see any of the four girls, the creepy classmate, the class rep or the two upper classmen as future romantic candidates. So I wouldn’t call it harem at this point.

I don’t remember calling it a harem. The first episode just didn’t work for me. Maybe the second episode will be better, but I dunno.

Ben-To was enjoyable, it felt fresh for some reason. Hope it will get even better!

Oh, Kimi to Boku is still good… Maybe it’s because it’s so… well, nothing special at all? Slow, dull, no music, no comedy. Just plain reality, but a bit more boring.

So it’s “still good” but “nothing special” and “slow, dull… a bit more boring.” I don’t get it!

I think you should watch the second episode of Fate/Zero if you haven’t already. The second episode introduces some of the servants which makes the episode actually entertaining and not just EXPOSITIONS like the first. It may not be enough to change your opinions but I think it’s worth a try.

“Whatever you say man. I only liked the X series until it turned to crap.”

You mean the X6 X7 X8 ones? I’m guessing you didn’t bother to play the Zero series, the only other one I considered worthy.
