C3 Ep. 3: Crawling in my skin

Fear: “I have many sins… that’s why I’m cursed to sin.”

Oh okay. C3 getting a whole lot “darker” apparently means becoming an angst-ridden, fanfiction-esque mess. First, the anime tries too hard:

The show wants to come off as demented, but it just looks juvenile. Take Umineko no Naku Koro ni and strip out any of the tongue-in-cheekness and you’d probably get C3. I mean, seriously, this is like seeing an emo goth kid’s wet dream. You don’t want to get to close to me, man! I hurt people. And I might hurt you — BONK!

And of course, Haruaki has the burning desire to save Fear from her downward spiral despite knowing the girl for all of — oh, I dunno — a week at most? One of the rules of storytelling is to convince the audience to care for the protagonists. We’ve been given no reason, however, to care for Fear. She’s functionally useless — she’ll destroy your house when she gets the chance –, haughty, bossy, insulting and, oh yeah, she’s killed people. But since it’s a loli anime midget wearing thighhighs, ohmygodItotallyhavetosaveher.

I mean, if I had been given one single reason to think that Fear’s a good person at heart at all, I might understand why she’s at the center of the plot. Like maybe she saves a puppy. I don’t think saving a puppy offsets a history of homicide, but it’d be something — anything. C3, however, gives us nothing. A cube shows up one day, steals some guy’s crackers and wrecks his home, and all of a sudden, she must be protected and coddled at all costs.

The episode could’ve been half-entertaining if the fight scene between Fear and some crazy lady was a little longer. Unfortunately, the anime thought it would be a better idea to give each and every torture device a pointlessly long introduction, e.g. “TWENTY SIX MECHANISM: PIERCING CHAIN TYPE — “IRON MAIDEN!”

Who cares? Are there actually anime fans out there circle-jerking to the inane details of every damn move in Fear’s arsenal? “Gosh, guys, I wonder how many different mechanisms she has!” To compound matters, C3 slaps an ugly grain effect on everything. And like Blood-C, half of every fight is censored anyway. I don’t delight in watching blood and limbs fly, but I also don’t enjoy staring at black splotches for an extended amount of time. A jar of peanut butter contains more visceral content than anime these days.

Sweet action, bro.

Someone’s going to say that I shouldn’t judge the censored version of the anime. I never understood this argument. I didn’t understand the “You can’t judge this show because it’s not meant to be dissected week-by-week” argument either. Look, it’s presented to me this way so I’m going to judge it this way. Anime studios should know the limitations of their medium. If the action ends up being obscured due to censorship, then maybe change the action? If the story doesn’t hold up to weekly scrutiny, then maybe change the story? Sorry, you can’t cut up my steak into five tiny parts and balk when I think this is a stupid move.

I just can’t take it seriously with the pacing and the loli. Hi, I’m a typical harem an- jumps right into horror. :\

I can’t understand how Higurashi manages to do it so well though. Need to watch it some time. Probably the dementia.

Higurashi had a clear divide between the suspense and portent and its everyday antics, but it also knew how to transition logically between them. The crazy didn’t so much jump out of absolutely nowhere as it did slowly creep into the plot, and more importantly once it started it never left. The horror part never spontaneously halted so that there could be lighthearted comedy- it happened progressively and stayed with one tone until the arc was finished.

The main reason there was an even balance of pseudo-harem-ism in Higurashi was because there were multiple arcs which started this way, yet all of them devolved into insanity by the end.

C3 doesn’t do this. One second it’s one series, and the next it’s another entirely. It also doesn’t help that the “dark” elements really aren’t very dark – they’re too ridiculous and cliched to be taken seriously, and there’s no buildup or investment in any of the characters. There’s no atmosphere or tension either. I don’t fear for anyone’s life or safety because the anime doesn’t have the gumption to hurt or kill them, and even if it did I don’t care about them in the first place.

I don’t know a lot about iron maidens, but I’m pretty sure they’re not “piercing chain type”. In fact, to my knowledge, iron maidens don’t contain any piercing chains at all. Really, the idea of piercing chains is pretty weird. Chains aren’t really suited for piercing things.

Maybe she just plays the next generation of Pokemon games?

Wait! Maybe she’s referring to a chain that’s connected to someone’s piercing? That, uh, explains it all.

And what’s with anime’s obsession with protecting people? Give your average teenager superpowers and I doubt his only wish will be to “protect my friends”.

I dunno anything about torture devices. I just always thought screaming out the name of your moves were tacky.

Just once I want to see this happen, then the opponent does something like whip out a pistol and shoot them Indiana Jone-style or dive for cover, completely negating whatever awestriking uber-attack was supposed to annihilate them.

Why? Because the idiot telegraphed what they were going to do before they did it. Tactics 101, not to mention basic common sense, yet it’s another preposterously overused trope that anime seems completely oblivious to. Things like this are in absolutely dire need of being mocked, or at least pointed out in character. Is Japan just exceptionally bad at satire or something?

I dunno if I could answer that question, but since you brought up Indy, Lucas really has a difficult time handling actors straying from his scripts. I think the famous scene you’re referring to was all Harrison Ford. Anyway, we all know that Star Wars turned out to be a massive success, but apparently, the original script sucked. Hell, even the initial reel of Star Wars sucked. Thanks to his wife (who was a well known editor at the time), however, and various advice from other industry friends, he made enough tweaks to Star Wars to turn it into the success that it is now.

So flying high with this awesome idea, he gives a general outline to how Empire Strikes Back should’ve gone to other people. They make what is arguably the best Star Wars film ever. Lucas, however, wasn’t pleased. They had wasted too much of his money and he thought ESB was horrible. The following exchange occurred between Gary Kurtz and Lucas:

“One of the arguments that I had with George about Empire was the fact that he felt in the end, he said, we could have made just as much money if the film hadn’t been quite so good, and you hadn’t spent so much time. And I said, ‘But it was worth it!'”

By the time the prequels rolled around, Lucas’s wife isn’t around anymore. Kurtz isn’t around anymore. Lucas insists on writing and directing everything now. He has a stranglehold on his films and there’s a cadre of yes-men behind him who are too afraid to speak up against the industry legend. So what became of this? Three mediocre-at-best films. I’m not trying to take anything away from Lucas, who did his own part in revolutionizing filmmaking, but it’s interesting to see how personally offended he got by the idea of other people tampering with his work.

Oh well, I thought it was an interesting story.
