Fall’s Week 3 Roundup: Too many shows to watch

As always, I rank these shows by how much I’m looking forward to them week-by-week. In other words, this list is not meant to be an accurate reflection of how I would rate these shows’ quality, which is something I’d never be interested in doing anyway.

18. Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo / To Love Ru Darkness / Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankeinai yo ne! (Prev: 12)
See Harem Hill… whenever I get around to it.

17. Robotics;Notes (Prev: UR)
This show is so boring.

16. CODE:BREAKER (Prev: 11)

15. Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de (Prev: UR)
It’s the video game anime… y’know, the show about the war between the Segua Kingdom and the Ninteldo Empire. I think the problem here is that the show isn’t quite ridiculous enough. It has its moments… like when the general lady seemingly creamed her pants at the sight of Gear defeating her strongest men:

But the more you watch the show, the more it reuses the same gimmick of girls being put into uncompromising situations. I guess if you can’t come up with a funny joke, fanservice is the way to go. When girls aren’t losing their clothes or getting groped though, Aoi Sekai no Chuushin de pulls its punches. Go for it, man. If you’re going to be retarded, go full retard! Just showing me a super-serious Mario and his Yoshi though… why is that funny?

14. Magi (Prev: 15)

13. K (Prev: 10)
Okay, this exchange at the start of the third episode was kind of funny:

Munakata: “Suoh, let’s get straight to the point. Your buzzword is pushing its limit. If the buzzword should fall, we’ll have a repeat of the buzzword. If you insist on drawing more power from the buzzword, I will have to kill you.”

Suoh: “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Unfortunately, the rest of the episode bored me. As a result, I’ll keep an eye on the show, but I can’t stand to blog it weekly anymore. On another note, the show has a pretty low opinion of females thus far. We’ve already seen the naked catgirl. Even cop lady here can’t help but wear a skirt so short, her ass is hanging out. There’s also this bizarre perspective… her left breast is just jutting out for no reason.

12. Little Busters (Prev: 13)
Every time I watch an adaptation of a Key visual novel, one of the love interests is always incredibly stupid, whiny, and childish. In the adaptations by KyoAni, the main character’s sarcasm cuts through the stupidity a little bit… a little bit. The main problem here is that the main character is your generic nice guy, so I get to listen to the idiot loli coo without any repercussion. Naoe’s too ineffectual to redeem just another boring show about friends having fun.

I was led to believe that the story isn’t just about a guy and his haremettes, and while this is somewhat true, the main character’s exchanges with his Little Busters group aren’t exactly dynamic. The guys are distinguished more by exaggerating a single aspect of their personalities rather than actually being three-dimensional. To be fair, it’s still early, I guess.

11. Ixion Saga DT (Prev: 14)
Remember the villain who got his balls kicked hard by the hero at the end of the first episode? He also got them hammered in last week’s episode. The third episode thus begins with the doctor telling the villain that they had to remove his balls. This was the villain’s reaction:

Meanwhile, I’m sort of enjoying the show’s subversion of the generic RPG mascot. There’s nothing grand or complex about the show, and I still think the aesthetics are incredibly ugly and garish. But despite these complaints, my opinion of the anime is improving week by week. Ixion Saga DT still isn’t a show I’d look forward to watching, but I don’t dread the experience. I’d say it’s more entertaining to than something like K.

10. Kamisama Kiss (Prev: 9)
I’ll talk more about this show in my weekly feature on shoujos.

9. Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai! (Prev: 6)
There’s maybe a single good joke a week. For example, Yuuta’s dream at the start of the second episode. Everything else is just too childish, which is why I decided not to write a dedicated entry for the show every week. Plot twist: every KyoAni show nowadays must involve the formation of some dinky little club.

C’mon, KyoAni… just make your pretty mahou shoujo show and be done with it. And as of the third episode, things are getting a little too moe for my tastes.

8. Sukitte Ii na yo. (Prev: 8)
Mei got lame super fast. Same with Kamisama Kiss, I’ll have more to say about this later.

7. Zetsuen no Tempest (Prev: 1)
The storytelling is falling apart.

6. Sword Art Online (Prev: 4)
The melodrama was fun to mock while it lasted, wasn’t it?

5. BTOOOM! (Prev: 3)
It’s not that I like the show. I think it’s plenty flawed and plenty stupid. But as with Sword Art Online, there’s a perverse fun in seeing a trainwreck in action.

4. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures (Prev: 7)

3. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun (Prev: 5)
As with Sukitte Ii na yo, I’ll just save my thoughts on this show for later. For what it’s worth though, I think this is the best shoujo of the few that we have… for now, anyway.

2. Shinsekai Yori (Prev: 2)

1. PSYCHO-PASS (Prev: UR)

So far I’ve just been keeping up with Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Psycho Pass, Jormungand Perfect Order and Sword Art Online. Ixion Saga DT had a pretty good first episode so I might keep up with that. However five shows appears to be my following limit. Any more and I might just start forgetting to follow some.

I’d probably follow Jormungand if it didn’t mean having to catch up on the first season. I just don’t have the time.

With the weird breast perspectives on your screenshot of K, I remember clearly thinking exactly the same thing when I saw that. I did however fail to notice how much her ass was hanging out.

You are missing out on not watching Girls und Panzer, it is the best show the season has to offer. Well, okay, more seriously it still is my number… 4? Probably. I don’t know whether I should say this, but it sort of reminds me of JoJo, i.e. massively stupid and over the top stuff played with a very serious face.

Shinsekai Yori is my numero uno, followed by Physco Pass. I am loving Shinsekai right now, I love how it’s slowly building up to hopefully a spectacular climax. If this climax fails, the show fails, but I have my hope!

And when I look at Kyoto Animation’s show of the season, it just hurts to think they made that instead of a Full Metal Panic sequel or something…. oh wait, that has no clubs does it?

You compared it to JoJo. Do the girls duke it out with fists? If not, nuh uh. Not gonna fall for that trap.

They duke it out with Tanks, and it’s a martial art with tanks as well! I don’t know, but that’s even more impressive in it’s own retarded way.

Yeah…I kept up with a bunch of shows over the summer. Gonna have to limit myself this time, so some shows will either be dropped or just put on hold based on their third episode (can’t wait to decide finally), but comments on your list:

Pet Girl: I’m mostly shocked I don’t mind this show right now. I can somehow tolerate it.
Robotics;Notes: Heard bad things about it. Watched the first two episodes in order. Liked it. I blame the robots
Code;Breaker: Need to watch Ep 2, then 3 if it’s out
Aoi Sekai: You won’t be having this show on your radar for long, since I hear the next ep isn’t gonna air…for a while (you’ll have to scroll a bit). Otherwise, this show is so much crap, but I’m mostly in this because Video game references.
Magi: Need to watch Ep 2 & 3
K: Need to watch Ep 3
    Little Busters: On Hold…
Ixion Saga DT: Ep 2 saved me from dropping it, because I was so bored at Ep 1. Ep 3’s gonna have to be pretty good so I don’t put it on hold
Sukitte: Liking this more than I expected. Need to watch Ep 3 though.
Zetsuen: I expect to watch this until it ends.
Jojo: Yeah, not much needs to be said. Another show I expect to watch.
Shin Sekai: On hold. I’m just not into it right now. Maybe marathon might work best.

You like all the shows that I hate, and put on hold some of the shows that I like. I see how it is, bro.

Robotics Notes: Urgh. The female protagonist irritates me, seriously.

Magi: I can’t get into it.

    Btoom: Same

Ironically, those are the three hovering the edge of my drop list right now.

My opinion on episodes airing before the 21st:

    1. Shinsekai Yori – I love the world building and like the setting. The exposition was done right.
    2. Jojo’s Bizarre Adventures 2012 – The last episode was good fun. A bit too absurd/OTT, but I still loved it.
    3. Suki-tte Ii na yo. – Yeah, I realize that this show has like a million shoujo cliches, but in general, I find the execution of them solid.
    4. PSYCHO-PASS – Episode 2 was better than the first one in my opinion. The first one tried too hard to be cool and was lackluster.
    5. Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! – Quickly becoming too moe but the show isn’t completely grating on my nerves yet.
    6. Zetsuen no Tempest – Some explanation about magic in the third episode, with some explosions. Not very interesting, but I find it passable for a generic shounen.
7-16. Btooom!, Ixion Saga: Dimension Transfer, K, Kami-sama Kiss, Magi, ROBOTICS;NOTES; Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, Space Brothers, Sword Art Online, Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun – Shows that are either too dull or shows I don’t care enough about to post a one-liner.
    17. Code: Breaker – Male hero believes that it is right for him to judge any and all people. and should be allowed to kill whoever he wants. Tried to kill the protagonist as well, and she’d be dead if she wasn’t immune to his flames. Wouldn’t be surprised if the rest of the cast were all black and white with their morals.
    18. Busou Shinki: Gross show for people with a certain fetish
    19. Little Busters! – Incredibly annoying
    20. Girls und Panzer – Ughhhhhhhh

      Suki-tte Ii na yo.

I dislike how Mei has turned into a puddle of shoujo neuroses.

Sounds like a certain idolized anime character out there.

If you’re referring to Light, yeah, he is basically a psychopath. I’m not entirely convinced that Rei is one though, which is why I have this problem with Code: Breaker.

I was just trying to point out that your description could be applied to both guys, yet most people unequivocally love Light.

Based on quality and what I’m actually following, I’d put:

    Tier 1: Shinsekai Yori, PSYCHO-PASS
Tier 2: Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun, Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
    Tier 3: Robotics;Notes
    Tier 4: K

I probably look forward to Jojo’s the most, given its entertainment value. Also because it has the best OP of the season.

If I wasn’t blogging, PSYCHO-PASS is probably the only show I’d watch as it is airing. With the other shows, I’d definitely wait until they were finished so I could skip the boring episodes.

It’s actually not so bad, the pet girl who’s dumber than a cat is fine too.
I am not going to watch To-Love-Ru who’s just a hentai in disguise of ecchi anime, and Onii-chan Dakedo which is better off as hentai anime, but Sakurasou no Pet Kanojo is definitely on the green light area. Yeah, probably because there are other guys in their dorm, lol. So it’s not really harem anime. The teacher also sees him as slave, while the hentai busty senpai loves the glasses senpai.

Umm… which series? To my knowledge, girls in To-Love-Ru don’t have genitals. As shown in the manga. It’s not just infant state. Haha.

And yet in Psycho-Path you somehow let the infantilization of an entire society slide.
        I call double standards.

A show that infantilizes only women and makes it out to be a cute, wonderful thing versus a show where the infantilization of an entire society is seen as a negative. Hm… yeah, you’re right. This is tricky and hard to grasp!

I can not see how a future in which a holographic jellyfish determinates the perfect moment for you to use the toilet is somehow negative!?

Oh the things I could do with my time, if I weren’t pressed to constantly make unimportant choices.

Was the major drop in Zetsuen no Tempest because of the lack of Shakespeare quotes, or just because the episode was bland?

Also, I think you should write a post about Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo.

If I have to announce the shows I’m interested in this season, Psycho-pass (obviously), tonari, kamisama kiss and tempest… Shinsekai might catch up with latter on.

Out of all those the only ones I’ll be watching regularly are Psycho-pass, tonari and Kamisama Hajim..etc, the reason why you don’t like Kamisama is still a mystery to me, but to each their own.

The show I was the most looking forward was Psycho-pass so bringing out all of my superstition I bashed it all I could, I thought the worst of the worst and hoped to be proven wrong… oh how I’m gonna love Thursdays .

As for tempest…. well bones is trying really hard to push all of the fujoshi buttons they can get their hands on, if that gives you something to expect

What I thought was all speculation, since it was before the first episode aired, just like in a test, I leave all the nervousnesses just right before the exam, once it start you might as well relax and enjoy it… it can always become a train wreck though
