Hitsugi no Chaika – Avenging Battle Ep. 5: Chaika, Chaika, Chaika!

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0501

Ugh, now they’re twice as annoying. Well, there’s usually nothing to discuss with these Chaika episodes, so let’s blog this one with “pretty” pictures.

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0502

I like how easy it is for our heroes to break free from their captors. The bad guys always employ idiots.

Naturally, Chaika just has to rescue the twintailed shoujo. Who in their right mind would leave a pretty girl behind?

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0505

Her name is Niva Lada, and she becomes Chaika’s property by sucking on our heroine’s finger or something. Just anime being anime.

Oh look, it’s just Fredrica being the show’s swiss army knife. Too bad they only use her for asspulls. Anyway, everyone ends up becoming allies. What an orgy.

Then Chaika stumbles across a room full of mass-produced Faylas and whatnot, but the show already told us that they were mass-producing shit last week, so I don’t know why I’m seeing this again.

Everyone eventually converges in the forest, and upon seeing Niva Lada, Akari makes another unfunny joke. Ha. Ha. Our heroes and their temporary allies beat up on some poor animals. Enjoy.

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0508

The bad guy really just wants Niva Lada back. I think we should do it. It’s not nice to steal an old man’s twintailed shoujo.

But like every shitty action movie ever, you can disable the bad guys’ operation by just targeting one particular thing: that stupid command tower you see above.

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0510

You call that a Gundo? Now this is a Gundo.

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0511

Oh boy, the twintailed shoujo turns into a gun! How fresh and original! barf

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0513

We came all the way out here to see Chaika get herself a fancy, new upgrade. Ho hum.

Hitsugi no Chaika - Avenging Battle 0512

So now that the common enemy’s been eliminated, these guys are going to fight, right? Nah, of course not!  Then right before the credits roll, a bunch of old men sit around and talk about stuff. Meh. Welp, that about does it for our latest Chaika episode! No major revelations — unless you consider Guy manipulating them a revelation, which I don’t — no interesting characterizations, no cool fights, no subtext to explore, no themes to expound upon, only average animation quality to look at… and way too many Chaikas to listen to. I’m out, people. Time to slam back some Nyquil and actually go to sleep for once.

Tomorrow’s Psycho-Pass update will probably be late. It all depends on when I wake up and how long it takes my flu-addled mind to break the show down.

  1. I still can’t get over that Two and a Half Chaika thing you made some past week. It was brilliant.

As for the post itself, I just wanna point out that Chaika taking aim with her fancy new gun is equivalent to putting her eye irresponsibly close to the twin-tailed shoujo’s you-know-what.
    Oh boy, yuri implications!

    Hope you get well ASAP.

  2. the henchmen were so useless it wasnt even funny(actually it was kinda funny seeing toru’s smug face staring at his daggers in that pic).

and I think it’s either the smallest evil dungeon ever or there are just way too many contrivances with how everyone keeps bumbing into one other, I sighed at every coincidence like akari finding everyones weapons.

I agree, its lame for that twintail girl to only be a generic robot that transforms into a deus ex machina when she could’ve been something more.

  3. This episode baffled me.
The stupidity level of these villains is over 9000!
Makes you wonder how this island can be operational for years without falling apart.

Easily one of the worst Chaika episode.

  4. Enjoy the flu-brain, mate. I’m loving mine. heh Get well soon.

And seriously why do these damn shows keep making the mistake of writing their narratives like it’s a video game script? Games have a different way of progressing than typical narratives for a reason. You can’t just having characters yammer on and on in a videogame no matter how interesting the dialogue is. It’s why I can never watch Dot Hack at a series (because the narrative just fits perfectly in the games) and why I can’t imagine what the Evangelion games must be like since that story is just not at all the kind of progression that fits a game.

I don’t know. You can do anything when creating a story so whatever. It’s just crap when you make the chapters/episodes out to be such a blatant game-like progression.

    1. I’m having a hard time not believing that these people writing LNs and manga aren’t also otaku, which kind of makes sense: otaku writing for otaku. And most otaku (at least your average anime/manga nerd) do play video games. So the story in video games and maybe other manga are the only outlets of “inspiration” that they get.

Just a vicious, unending cycle it looks like to me.

  5. I don’t get the artist’s thing with the extra “L”-shaped rogue eyelash that shoots out from all the girls’ eyes. Maybe he/she thinks that’s like super-moe or something? All it’s doing for me is being off-putting. Like the eyebrow game in this show is ridiculous, I think we can go without the scorpion-stingers.

Also, fuck. That weapon’s design is FULL-RETARD. There’s a pretty distinct line between making something mystical and cool (like the show’s base-guns) and then there’s “that thing”. Compare the FF X-2 Gunmage weapons to this bullshit.

I love guns and that transform-gun just hurt my eyes looking at it.
