According to my readers, Gugure! Kokkuri-san is the best show that I’m not currently watching. I really don’t see how it would appeal to me, though. Plus, even if I did watch it, I wouldn’t have anything to say. It’s not the type of show that really engages my thought process. As you may have already notice, I almost never write on shows like Gugure! Kokkuri-san. Our second place finisher is selector spread WIXOSS, but ugh… I’ve been there. Not only that, I spent the entire summer watching another one of Mari Okada’s disastrous creations. I don’t think I could stomach watching selector spread WIXOSS. After that, we have a three-way for third: Nanatsu no Taizai, Yowamushi Pedal: Grande Road, and Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru. In other words, I would have to pick between a creepy pervert, a sports anime with a billion episodes, or a show about magical school girls. Ah well. It doesn’t look like I’ll have anything new to watch!
Week 8’s Rankings
27. Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji
I’m glad to see that there is so much camaraderie between playboys. It really saddens me to see Kyouya being a dick to one girl and one girl only. What a waste of red pill potential!
26. Trinity Seven
Still no story and fake-looking breasts galore. These guys can’t even do fanservice right.
25. Terra Formars
I’m just ranking it for the sake of completion. I can’t find anything to say about it. It’s so boring.
24. Inou Battle Within Everyday Life
Oh god, give me a break. Everything in this week’s episode is dumb, but especially Jurai’s half-assed apology. The only good thing to have come out of this series was this sweet rant that may as well be about anime characters in general:
23. Grisaia no Kajitsu
TL;DW: Yuuji swaps saliva with his daughter, then finds out later that he has to kill her. That’s all you need to know.
22. Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete
If Kaori wants to die that badly, maybe her friends should just oblige her. Also, we pretty much got a redux of the very first episode. The only difference here is that we now have Yui to be as equally worthless as the other characters. Yeah, it’s not a fun show to watch.
21. Akame ga Kill!
Uninspired shounen action can’t help but put me to sleep. Why would I want to watch a shitty knock-off of Dragon Ball Z when I could just watch any of those recent Dragon Ball Kai episodes instead?
20. Madan no Ou to Vanadis
Tigre’s military exploits are somehow even more boring than his harem exploits. You can be a great warrior, a clever strategist, or perhaps even both. Our harem lead fails on both accounts. This show’s war tactics leave much to be desired.
19. Cross Ange
Of course this anime would have a beach episode. I mean, just because you’re trapped on an island prison and forced to fight for your life against dragons from another dimension doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun on the side! And by fun, we really mean parading around in skimpy swimsuits for the audience’s enjoyment. Oooh, such fun!
18. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
Overwrought and far too pretentious for its own good.
17. Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai
For what it’s worth, this show will probably finish out the season as the least offensive harem. Too bad this is such a pointless and empty accomplishment.
16. Log Horizon 2
You shouldn’t dumb things down even if you’re doing a show for kids. Some of the best shows for kids are also the smartest ones. You definitely shouldn’t short-change the animation budget for any audience.
15. Shirobako
60% percent of the episode reminds me why I generally ignore slice-of-life anime. What a meandering bore. The drama with Ema losing faith in her abilities piques my interest a bit, but it isn’t psychologically interesting enough to save everything else that I don’t like. These characters aren’t rich and complex enough for me to have any emotional investment in them. In fact, their character arcs resemble the ones for every P.A. Works heroines I’ve ever seen.
14. Sword Art Online II
Even in an arc that is supposed to be all about Asuna and her problems, the Gary Stu just couldn’t resist, could he?
13. Gundam Build Fighters Try
Want an emotional story? Throw a sick imouto or otouto at it. It’s enough to make one gag. The rest of the episode embodies the sort of safe, low-effort drama that barely even registers with me. I’ve already forgotten all about Shimon and his otouto. The resulting fight didn’t resonate with me either. Just two similar characters duking it with loud declarations to affirm their never-give-up-itude. The side characters even conveniently get knocked out of the match early to clear the way for these two kindred spirits, and the only explanation we’re given is that Sekai’s buddies hesitated. Then in the end, the wholesome, honest-to-a-fault hero wins again, tickling the love interest’s fancy.
12. Fate/stay night – Unlimited Blade Works
The showdown with Caster was a letdown. These characters just talk too goddamn much about things that aren’t particularly important to me. Then in the end, everyone just walks away from each other. We’ve had two major Servant vs. Servant battles now, and they’ve both ended in stalemates for all intents and purposes.
11. Donten ni Warau
Seriously? But it’s funny. Sora has been whining about growing up, maturing, and gaining strength, but him lending Nishiki a hand is the most mature thing he’s done all season. I’m a bit surprised at the direction of the story, though. I didn’t think a show with this many bishies would hint at a potential relationship between one of the main characters and an actual girl. Maybe she’s going to die or something. That would be terribly sad. As for the rest of the episode, there’s not much to say. Everyone’s still reeling from Tenka’s death, so people are just trying to pick up the pieces, reflect on recent events, etc. It might be your cup of tea if you’re already enjoying this series, but I found it kind of slow and boring to watch.
10. Hitsugi no Chaika: Avenging Battle
This would be a good anime if the characters were actually rich and complex in their characterizations.
9. Akatsuki no Yona
More revelations about Yun! More than I would ever care to know!
8. Psycho-Pass 2
Oh Psycho-Pass… why must you hurt me when I want to love you so?
7. Gundam: Reconguista in G
For once, I actually want an anime to world-build. As a result, our most recent Reconguista in G episode was actually pretty fun to watch.
6. Shirogane no Ishi: Argevollen
I wish the show had been like this from the start. Like a lot of shows that get two-cours, the first half lacked a tight, focused narrative. Why do two cours if you’re just going to fill it up with side stories? Oh well. I wonder if Samonji’s going to die at this rate. He seems to be on a runaway course for a tragic ending. It’s also interesting to see the story transition to wars being fought without soldiers. With anime’s dreams of high-tech grandeur, it’s surprising how uncommon remote warfare seems to be.
5. Amagi Brilliant Park
The show is moderately amusing. Yep.
4. Parasyte
Even after almost a week, I still feel that it was a cop-out to have Mamoru kill Shinichi’s mother. All that build-up led to nothing. Everything leading up to that was good, though.
3. Mushishi Zoku Shou
I’ll do a post on the most recent episode later this week… if I remember to.
2. Garo: The Carved Seal
Did people really think the previous episode was bad? Shrug, I liked it. It had thematic significance.
1. Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis
I still think Garo is currently the better show overall, but for just this week, it’s the return of the king.
Week 9’s Question
If you could make me blog any anime — any anime out there — what anime would it be?
attack on titan
Some kind of harem moe anime that hates itself. Like the protagonist will go out of his way to point out how everything is just so stupid and cliche.
I want you to blog Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Oh well. hopefully you will blog the remake.
About Argevollen, I see nothing wrong with side stories. It did pay off.You get to know the characters, the situations, and I like the slow building tension.
There’s nothing wrong with side stories in general. I just didn’t care for the ones in Argevollen.
12 kingdoms.
I too have been told by people that Gugure is the best show – so I keep watching, and I’m beginning to think I may be better off just not dealing with said people ever again..
I liked it a lot when I started, but it’s been going steadily downhill. I just watched half of last week’s episode and stopped.
Death Note. It seems like something you´d enjoy. Anyways, another great post :)
I enjoyed it for about ten episodes. Then I didn’t.
I’d want you to blog Rurouni Kenshin
Boku no pico
I think this horse has been beaten to death.
I know, but I couldn’t think of anything else.
Um, I guess Fate/zero.
Jigoku shoujo/Hellgirl season 3
I’d like to say Hunter x Hunter, but I’m sure you wouldn’t love it as much as I do. The first few arcs, though enjoyable and vital as set-up for world-building, character and tone for later arcs, are by far the weakest. You have to watch 75 episodes to get to the only arc that I’d say has something thematically poignant about humanity to say, Chimera Ant, and the arc itself is 60 episodes long. I love the show’s rule-based fights that can be short&sweet, its large cast of characters that quickly feel internally consistent, the way each arc has a different tone/style (shounen exam, save your friend arc, shounen tournament, noir-ish thriller, MMORPG adventure, existential war drama, fun political parody/thriller), how the author’s love of puzzles manifests itself in every arc, how he has no qualms about offing characters to give you the impression that their world is real enough… It just feels like an adventure. You might enjoy it, but you likely wouldn’t love it, and you probably wouldn’t pick it up anyway due to its large episode count
So I’d go with Tatami Galaxy
Yeesh.
I did write a post about Tatami Galaxy back in the day. It was also back when I was less confident about my anime interpretations. As such, this guy’s — in my opinion — ridiculous push back against my post deterred me from writing more about the show.
and how the protagonist operates on an alien moral spectrum*, he’s kinda like Goku in many ways but there’s an emphasis on his selfishness and love of thrills that rarely had meaningful consequences in DBZ (there, it’s mostly played to build us up for an excruciatingly drawn out fight or for laughs when Goku abandons his wife w/ no qualms at all)
Girlfriend (Kari)
I don’t watch shows with only one gender.
If it was a good series, Major. I usually don’t get hooked by sports anime, but this one has 6 seasons of 24 episodes and I saw everything with my boyfriend in less than 3 months.
But If it was supposed to make you suffer than Saint Seiya: The Hades Chapter – Inferno. The manga have more different drawings than this part of the anime.
It doesn’t have to make me suffer. Just curious what people’s answers would be. Some were expected, like calls for Attack on Titan or Utena. Some, however, are actually interesting.
Space Runaway Ideon. You’d probably hate it, but I’d love to see your reactions.
Hm, hadn’t heard of it.
OreGairu
Maybe I can watch the sequel.
Shoujo Kakumei Utena.
I feel like the topic’s been exhausted.
Serial experiments Lain; I personally think it’s one of the greatest anime ever made. If you havent made a post on it before id like to see what your thoughts were on that series
Trigun would be a good one. Or Lain ^
“Arpeggio of Blue Steel”?
And I don’t know if you read manga, but, would you like to try “Gate!!!: Thus the JSDF Fought There”?
Yup I totally agree with Inou Battle Within Everyday Life. I’m glad you were able to watch it long enough to see the rant. It’s really boring and I actually felt insulted with the way that powerful rant was handled, rather wasted. Not only did they conveniently have third parties intervene and give advice, terrible ones I should add, the apology was so bad. She just said she doesn’t understand his chuuni stuff yet he reverts to that style of talking to apologies. I mean what, the, hell? I won’t even bother talking about the poor dialogue. Gosh what a waste, what a waste. The rant though was really nice though, excellent voice acting.
Fate stay encyclopedia. Way too much talking. I can’t wait to see how they handle God Eater.
I have to second what anabchamploni said. Major is the second sports series and probably the only one I’ll watch. It was excellent from beginning to end. 6 season and I felt every episode had importance and they even gave it a nice ova for closure. People have been praising ping pong here though so I might check it out too.
Id love it if you watched Oregairu I’m glad someone else mentioned it too even though I don’t feel too comfortable recommending you a show that might get less views than Mushishi which you actually like. I like attack on titan but the pacing was just off. It started high and then had a real boring middle part. If I had to choose a 2013 anime it would be between Oregairu and Gatchaman. OreGairu was just a breath of fresh air in a genre that desperately needed something different. I pretty much gave up on slice of life before watching it. While I’m super excited for season 2 I’m nervous that it’ll fault like psycho pass. OreGairu definitely has the best high school protagonist in a slice of life ever. And since it’s slice of life you should be able to watch the second season alone and be fine, while for gatchaman you’d have to see the first season. I’m not even sure if gatchamn is gonna air next year.
Lain, Redline or Gankutsuou.
At the end of that rant, I can’t help but hear the words “OWNED” reverberating at the top of my head. And still that guy has no more emotional response than a road sign! Holy sauerkraut.
If anything, you could do Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere? You tried once, but I’d like to see another go at it. It’s ugly as sin, so watching it with you should lessen the pain for me.
Maybe Darker Than Black. Or any of the Masaaki Yuasa anime you haven’t already written posts on.
There’s a lot to choose from. Almost too much.
I’ll second Twelve Kingdoms. Fairly unique series that’s not very well known.
You could do a review/blog of Midori Days or I My Me, Strawberry Eggs just for the lulz.
Just review Precure, man.
ANY anime? TRULY ANY? Hmmmmmmm…. how about Bihada Ichizoku?
