Everything Else Pt. 1 (Summer ’18)

Short post this week, but that’s because I’ve already the first episode for a lot of these anime series. As a result, I’m going to take the opportunity to get some of the logistics out of the way. In the future, these are the shows that I’ll definitely be covering in my weekly “Everything Else” feature:

  • Angels of Death
  • Attack on Titan 3
  • Cells At Work!
  • Holmes of Kyoto
  • Overlord III
  • Steins;Gate 0

I haven’t decided whether or not I want to include Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi on this list. It may still get its own post if I want to piss and moan about Aoi some more. Also, the jury’s still out on the following:

  • High Score Girl
  • Happy Sugar Life
  • Grand Blue
  • Lord of Vermillion

They might get their own post, they might not. I just need to watch them first to make that determination. For now, my summer updating schedule looks like this:

Monday
Phantom in the Twilight
(Maybe) Kakuriyo no Yadomeshi

Tuesday
(Maybe) The return of something terrible

Wednesday
Everything Else

Thursday
Banana Fish
Tenrou: Sirius the Jaeger

Friday
Shichisei no Subaru
Harukana Receive
(Maybe) High Score Girl

Saturday
(Maybe) Happy Sugar Life
(Maybe) Grand Blue
My Hero Academia
Persona 5

Sunday
Planet With
Hanebado!

Honestly, the summer season looks pretty weak. Other than Banana Fish and maybe Tenrou: Sirius the Jaeger, I’m not particularly excited to watch any of the other shows. I still enjoy the likes of Persona 5 and (for now) Hanebado!, but you know what I mean. I guess that’s why I’m hoping to do a little less blogging in summer. 2018 may have peaked in the winter season. If there’s a show you think it would be worthwhile for me to cover, let me know and I’ll consider it.

Having said that, I’m kinda amazed how fast time flies. I started blogging again last October, and it’s already July. Three more months and I’ll have actually lasted a full year. If history repeats itself, that means I’ll burn myself out in about five or six months and go on hiatus again. Hopefully, I’ll actually stick around this time. Knock on wood, right? More realistically, the blog peaked around 2015. I obviously have a smaller audience these days, but that also means I feel less stress and pressure. It’s not quite as simple as watching a bunch of anime and putting my thoughts to paper. This time around, I haven’t had to get into too many pointless internet debates over Japanese cartoons. But who knows? Maybe a new Fate series will crop up one day and serve as the next big hornet’s nest on the horizon.

Anyways, I was going to talk about both Overlord and Steins;Gate 0 this week, but the next Steins;Gate 0 episode is delayed until July 18th. So… all you get is a tiny blurb on Overlord. Whoops. Oh, I know — I’ll post pictures of all the dessert dishes I had while I was in NYC.

Overlord III Ep. 1

Albedo discovers that she can’t ride her pet bicorn because she’s a pure maiden. That’s right, this succubus has never actually slept with anyone. Isn’t that, like, one of the primary job requirements to being a succubus? Shalltear, on the other hand, has at least slept with women. This smacks of the anime wanting to have it both ways, though. By rendering the vampire “untainted” by another man’s touch, she’s still an eligible waifu for all the stupid nerds out there who care about that sort of thing. Anyways, the two female women proceed to argue over Ainz even though he has never once shown any romantic interest or sexual desire for either of them (or anyone for the matter). Afterwards, Albedo goes out of control when she hears Ainz praising the NPCs, so she ends up trying to rape her overlord to no avail. Well, it sounds like he needs help to pull her off of him. Nevertheless, it’s hard to imagine how the virginal succubus intends to bone a skeleton.

Overlord may have gotten a new season, but it’s still the same boring show about Ainz and his army of sycophants going through their daily lives. Not much of note happens at all in this week’s episode. We’re introduced to even more maids, and I can’t keep track of them all. The only semi-interesting tidbit that we get to hear about is Demiurge’s sick breeding experiments.

Hahaha why not test the waters by doing a post on the latest Fate/Stay night film? I highly doubt it’ll influence your opinion on the series in a significant way, but perhaps its change in perspective and thematic focus will give you something talk about as you compare/contrast its subject material to your already established viewpoints on the franchise

It can’t be a movie. It has to be a series. It takes a sustained amount of pissing and moaning from me to generate enough vitriol that makes me think, “Blogging ain’t worth it.”

Those were the days. Commentors were gunning for you but I remember someone specifically telling you that you’re read on unlimited blade works was faulty because the japanese fandom (and the general fate community) was praising ep 8 of season 2 as if it was the second coming of Chuck Norris, meaning you must have missed something. Whew, I got a good laugh out of that one; good times.

I don’t even remember that. The biggest annoyance for me over the years was people getting pissy at me for dropping Shinsekai Yori. God forbid I don’t like a show.

RIP ep1 of Overlord… I can’t quite say it’s filler because I think most scenes technically served a purpose, but it sure felt like a boring way to open the season… especially in the middle of the mass isekai assault.

Well, having read the LN’s a while back I’m sad that they played off Albedo’s rape attempt as yet another bog-standard “it’s funny because it’s a woman doing it to a man” comedy moment with no consequences. Especially disappointing since I seem to recall the LN doing a pretty respectable job of deconstructing that trope and making it a somewhat menacing/intimidating event… Uugh. Oh well.

I guess I can sort of see why they decided to start this particular season with the SoL bit, but I probably shouldn’t say too much yet if you actually intend on watching it.

I’ll do my best to bring as much controversy as I can and make your life as difficult as possible. Also, that donut looks great and now I’m hungry. Thx.

That wasn’t a challenge. I don’t mind anyone disagreeing with me in a civil way, but when people come charging in here and accuse me of being ignorant, I pretty much ignore them pretty quick. This is a hobby, and I have a full time day job. Getting into pointless internet slap fights ain’t my thing anymore.

This season is indeed pretty weak. What a shame.

“Maybe a new Fate series will crop up one day and serve as the next big hornet’s nest on the horizon.”

Meh, just ignore those Fate (and Type-Moon by extension) fans. Fate and Nasu as its writer are overrated. Just like all Nasu’s works, Fate has an interesting concept and potential, but its execution is just plain sucks because Nasu is such a bad writer. Deep and mature, my ass.

“This smacks of the anime wanting to have it both ways, though.”

The anime (and the light novel by extension) are full of stuff like this. I mean we don’t have to go far to see that the story want to have Ainz as both an evil overlord who commits a lot of inhuman, unspeakable acts for all the edgelords out there and the standard, goofy, and lovable everyman that you can root for by making all “his” evil acts committed by his sycophants without his knowledge. This story got no balls.

The one that interests me the most is that black with white lines and red/purple ice cream/pudding on a plate.
