Oof, they got me. I thought Sentenced to Be a Hero would be a Saturday show, but it actually airs on Thursdays instead. Great, now I have to shuffle my schedule around. Great, so is there anything to watch today or what?
Dead Account
What happens to social media accounts when their owners die? They become haunted, oooh~~~ Yeah, that’s not exactly what comes to mind when we talk about the dead internet. In reality, we’re inundated with bots that are both rotting our brains and our planet. Honestly, I’d rather be fighting ghosts, because at least that seems winnable. And that’s exactly what you get in Dead Account, which is sadly just another shounen anime. For what it’s worth, it does have the distinction of having one of the least likable protagonists in a long while.
Our “hero” Soji has a sister who is sick and needs expensive medical procedures in order to survive. As a result, he’s desperate for money — so desperate that he has become a rage-baiting, toxic streamer. He goes so far as to even sucker punch people in order to get views. When you start hurting others, you’ve already lost my sympathy. “Wouldn’t you rage-bait in order to save your sister?” No, I fucking wouldn’t. The solution to our terrible healthcare systems isn’t to make the world even shittier than it needs to be. Sure, his audience is just as bad, since they can’t help watching his videos. But you know what they say: two sucks don’t make a right.
Anyways, it turns out his sister still died (RIP), and he’s been chatting with an evil spirit all this time. This is when it gets all shounen-y: an exorcist shows up to try and destroy the ghost, but it turns out Soji has the potential. Yeah, don’t care, still a toxic shithead. Straight to the “Everything else” pile.
Reincarnated as a Dragon Hatchling
Oh good, another isekai, but it’s one of those “quirky” ones where the protagonist is not human. The title is self-explanatory: our hero is a dragon. Like every damn isekai out there, however, we have to go through every obligatory step in the process. As a result, he spends a good chunk of this episode as a dragon egg. Eventually, he “evolves” (read: hatch) and becomes a baby dragon. Unfortunately, this idiot has no survival skills whatsoever. One of the first thing he does is eat wild mushrooms, which is a big no-no unless you can spot the telltale signs. Then he must have played too much Pokémon, because when he sees humans, he immediately jumps out of hiding and tries to befriend them. Even as a human, I wouldn’t just randomly surprise complete strangers. But of course, the cute human girl protects him from his would-be killers. Look, the last time we had one of these “quirky” isekai, the hero was a vending machine and still pulled mad game. We also had an isekai where all the girls kept trying to seduce the “beheneko.” I’m not even joking. They literally wanted to bone a cat monster. So hey, I know I shouldn’t assume, but according to historical precedent, this girl will eventually wanna fuck our dragon protagonist. Yup, “Everything else” fodder again.
Scum of the Brave
Thanks to recent medical advancements, gang leaders can augment themselves and become demon lords. They are in turn hunted by bounty hunters known as Braves (even though they keep saying “yuusha” over and over), who are in turn augmented by a drug that they inject directly into their necks. Our protagonist Yashiro is one such Brave, but he’s more of an antihero. He didn’t save Jogamine, a high school girl who also aspires to be a Brave, because he wanted to. It just more or less happened because her pursuer was being a shithead. And now she needs his help, because one of her comrades has been kidnapped by the local demon lord. Nevertheless, Yashiro won’t lend a hand unless he’s paid handsomely. That’s basically your first episode.
Did we really need all this “Demon Lord” and “Hero” nonsense? I don’t really think it adds anything to the story. I’m also not charmed by our antihero. Yashiro seems pretty run-of-the-mill for his archetype. Other than that, the animation is kinda shoddy for a first episode, and I’m not too keen about a bunch of high school girls following a middle-aged man around.
I’m not drawn to any of these shows. As of now, I have nothing to cover on Saturdays. I’m not opposed to taking a break day, especially on the weekends. But I could also just take one of the many Thursday shows and blog it on Saturdays instead. Yeah, maybe that’s what I’ll do.
