Daemons of the Shadow Realm Ep. 6: The twins turn the tables

I woke up late and still didn’t get enough sleep (got an important “exam” coming up), so here are some loose, unorganized thoughts. Sorry.

— I’ve been waiting all week to see what Yuru is capable of, but he immediately misses his first shot. All that aura instantly gone.

— The Daemons chasing the twins suddenly combine into one — ’cause, y’know, yin and yang — and just like that, the twins go missing. Somehow, the duo can create an empty space out of nowhere to imprison their victims. Hm, I wonder if the same thing happened to their parents.

— At first, Asa starts freaking out, ’cause I guess she has a complex about being alone. Convenient fatal flaw for the time being. But Right reveals that he’s right there with her… no pun intended. Huh. It’s strange how I’ve completely failed to notice until now that she doesn’t have any Daemon. But after a short discussion, it sounds like Left was maybe originally meant for Asa. Something about how Right can neutralize Asa and thus Left can neutralize Yuru. Therefore, this makes them “natural enemies” of their respective twin. Will we actually see these two Daemons split up and each follow a twin? But hey, at least this confirms that Yuru has yet to acquire his special power.

— Since he’s trapped and has no clue how to escape, Yuru figures he might as well take the time to adjust to his new bow. Damn, why is Yuru so unflappable? Does anything freak him out? “Nothing’s made any sense since my village was attacked.” Sure. On the one hand, there’d be no action if he was having a mental breakdown over finding out that his whole life is a lie, but on the other hand, I dunno, this might make him more interesting as a character. Right now, would I say that there’s anything compelling about Yuru? Eh… there’s nothing particularly remarkable about his personality. His circumstances are kinda interesting, but his reaction to them have been admittedly muted. Also, look at the way he responds to Left’s question. The Daemon wants to know if he’s worried about his sister. I thought he might say something like, “I don’t even know if I trust that she’s my sister.” Maybe most of his doubts are gone, i.e. he’s 95% confident that tall Asa’s his sister now. Fair enough. But that’s not why he isn’t worried. Rather, Yuru isn’t worried because Asa wields the power of Break, and as a result, no barrier can contain her. Okay, sure… but that’s such a boring, clinical reaction to your family member potentially being in danger. Again, he’s just unflappable, but that’s not much of a personality.

— Speaking of which, we immediately see Asa breaking free. That was easy. Then after splashing some of her own blood onto the yinyang Daemons, they’re now hers…? Just like that, huh? Kinda gross, too. I mean, you’re tossing bodily fluids around…

— Man, don’t tell me Asa’s gonna be a brocon for the rest of the series…

— Elsewhere, Jin and Gabby take out the intruders. Everyone here is so casual about taking a life. If you want to be pragmatic about it, one of these chumps might have info you want.

— Yuru and Gabby eventually bump into each other, but this encounter comes across as two siblings bickering. Yeah, this show doesn’t feel serious enough for me. Murdering people doesn’t have any weight. The girl who slaughtered half of your village is just someone to have a spat with.

— The attackers are all just hired goons. They have no useful information offer up even when (cutely) tortured.

— One of the attackers reveals that he thinks of his Daemons as nothing more than livestock, so Gabby gets all pissy. Okay, sure, he has a shitty attitude, but the girl who was judge, jury, and executioner for a bunch of villagers shouldn’t be the one throwing stones. It’s kinda laughable, really. Even if you argue that the village as a whole is evil, how do you know that everyone in it is also complicit? You don’t. But there’s just an overall casualness to how this show treats taking a human life, so yeah, it is funny when someone is offended on the Daemons’ behalf. It’s not that Daemons don’t deserve to be treated with respect, but we certainly don’t seem to treat people the same way.

— Right before the episode ends, Yuru asks about Asa’s missing eye. After some hesitation, she reveals that she’s already died once…? And at the hands of an assassin from Yuru’s village. We’ll probably get a flashback next week.
