The Ramparts of Ice Ep. 10: More friends? No, just more drama

It never ends. But before the drama can start, the core friend group hits up an amusement park. Gotta get that R&R in before things get dicey, I suppose.

This is a different park than the one in You and I Are Polar Opposites, right? I remember the other mascot being a cat. A very ugly cat, but still a cat. On the other hand, i don’t know what this mascot is. Is it supposed to be a duck but with wings on its head?

— Eh, it’s the stupid fanny pack over the chest thing again. Also, very grey. Very, very grey. Are these boys allergic to color? I mean, he dyed his hair so I’m assuming no (unless he actually has natural brown hair).

— Koyuki never mentioned her birthday, which has already passed. Nevertheless, Giraffe Guy insists on celebrating it. I wonder if this will only make Miki ship them harder. Ah, she’d probably do it anyway.

Yup. And of course, Minato is brooding. Is he still in denial about his feelings for her? Probably. I really hope Miki finds out that Giraffe Guy is actually into her by the end of this season. I’m kinda tired of this plot point, so I would like some tangible “progress.” I actually don’t care about the romance in this show because I’m not particularly charmed by any of the characters, but man, just get it over with already. Obviously, whether or not Miki chooses to date Giraffe Guy after she finds out is totally her business, but this pseudo-love polygon has more than run its course. We’ve been discussing Giraffe Guy and Koyuki since the start of the season.

Should’ve invited the Nishi-clone, then. Meanwhile, both Miki and Minato are huge scaredy cats.

Is Minato also not into rides or something? Or did the horror experience just completely ruin his vibe for the whole day?

— Both him and Koyuki, apparently. I don’t get sick like them, but I don’t find rides to be particularly pleasant either. They don’t give me any excitement. They’re just loud and all the shaking is kinda annoying.

— But hey, more quality time for Giraffe Guy with his crush. The only problem is that Miki thinks Koyuki is into him, so if she might end up feeling guilty about developing feelings for Giraffe Guy. But this is why I don’t like love polygons, real or pseudo, because who gives a shit about any of this?

— Meanwhile, Minato gets quality time for Koyuki, but he’s still not being honest with himself about how he feels about her. All this tells me is that he needs to sort his shit out before he even considers dating anyone.

This is so stupid. Oh my god, we’re sitting side-by-side, drinking from coconuts! That’s date-like! Uh, no…? You guys aren’t even sitting that close together. There’s no physical intimacy whatsoever.

— These mascots are wild.

More belated birthday presents.

— Koyuki would eventually ask Minato if he can’t handle horror. This embarrasses him greatly, but he does admit to his weakness. So for the first time ever, Koyuki finds a guy cute. Well, well, well… looks like we have our battle lines drawn. Earlier in the series, people wondered who Koyuki would go for. Like Minato, she isn’t really ready to date either. Her baggage with her ex is something she needs to put behind her completely before she could open up to anyone. But I honestly never saw Giraffe Guy as a viable partner. He just doesn’t have that main character love interest look, y’know? I feel like I’ve watched enough of these shows to know who the female lead always falls for, and it’s never a someone like Giraffe Guy. Meanwhile, she and Minato are kinda like… polar opposites!

Weird thing to admire, but sure.

— So they’re adopting the Nishi clone, right? I shouldn’t call her a Nishi clone. She already seems cooler than Nishi. I don’t dislike Nishi, but the super shy thing is not adorable to me.

— But just as soon as it looks like Koyuki and Minato might be hitting it off, we meet yet another new face: Miki’s brother. Koyuki is really comfortable with him, so Minato starts overthinking things again. Geez, this is getting kinda messy. Ah, just another month before the second season of You and I Are Opposites airs. I’m not into these messy entanglements and misunderstandings born from a sheer lack of communication. Honestly, I feel like Koyuki adopts an older sis vibe with Miki’s brother, so Minato has no reason to be concerned. But teens do like to be dramatic.

Okay, that’s a bit much. Specifically, it’s a bit unhealthy.

— Miki ships Koyuki with Giraffe Guy. Nishi clone ships her with Minato. Like I said, messy. Koyuki is just being shipped all over the place.

More new faces? Why don’t we try fleshing out the characters we already have? Yo, don’t get greedy.

— Oh, this new face is related to an older face? Even so, Koyuki’s past loves to keep haunting her. Just look at the way she introduces herself. I don’t remember high school being this dramatic.

— So what are the takeaways this week? The cast keeps growing by the minute, which I’m not too fond about. All it does is add more complications to the current group dynamic. Early on in the series, I found Minato’s pushiness kinda weird and off-putting. Well, he’s less pushy nowadays, but he still hasn’t shed his weirdness. Wanting to completely monopolize Koyuki’s time and attention when they’re merely friends is, again, not healthy. Meanwhile, Koyuki still hasn’t settled things with Igarashi, but we have yet another blast from the past to contend with. Of course, life is never neat and tidy. Life never waits for you to resolve one problem before moving onto the next. But the fact that a former classmate’s younger sister would walk up to Koyuki and introduce herself like this, it just feels too contrived for me. Again, too dramatic.

— Plus, at some point, the intensity of the drama just wears on you.
