Mmm, I don’t really get it. To be more specific, the episode didn’t make me laugh once. In fact, I got pretty bored halfway through. I love a lot of things Japanese. You could even accuse me of being a Japanophile. But Japanese humor? It’s a total miss for me. If you’re curious about the stuff I find funny, I think Kung Fu Hustle is the best comedy ever made, and I think Bill Murray agrees. But I don’t wanna get too off-topic. The point is, this anime is technically a romantic comedy, but like Hanaori from last season, the “com” is way more prevalent than the “rom.” But what if the “com” is mostly weird male nipple jokes?
So here’s the thing. Tan, one of the student council members, is your stereotypical mesugaki, except we’re actually dealing with a boy. Arisu, the seemingly gentle but physically violent treasurer, gives us evidence of Tan’s manhood over and over by kneeing him in the crotch whenever he gets a little too bratty. Nevertheless, the episode keeps shoving his boobs — yes, boys and men can have boobs and Tan is one of them — in our faces, and I dunno how I’m supposed to react to it besides cringing. I guess it’s a bit silly how male nipples are acceptable but female nipples aren’t. But to be honest, I’d rather see neither. Yes, I don’t want to see a girl’s nipple either. Outside of a sexual context, it’s just awkward. No, I do not want your nudes. Just a random naked person does not do anything for me.
Anyway, other jokes are like… Arisu giving the MC Ume a rag, but when he looks closer, it’s a pair of panties? Okay? Is that supposed to be a punchline? The president accidentally ends the assembly by showing the entire student body a video of rabbits fucking. Ume rushes onstage to close the laptop, but ends up squishing her boobs in the process. Ha… ha…? Is the joke her big boobs? Am I supposed to laugh at that? Even worse, the visuals aren’t much to look at. Granted, it’s a slice-of-life anime, but the characters are often just standing in the middle of blank nothingness. Sometimes, there is a patterned background. Sometimes. Point is, if the comedy isn’t jiving, the fanservice isn’t titillating, and the visuals are bland, what do we have left? Me almost nodding off even though it’s still a couple hours before my bedtime. Personally, even though Hanaori didn’t make me laugh either, I enjoyed the energy of the voice acting performances. I can’t quite say the same here.
