Star Driver Ep. 17: I missed nothing.

The anime was no Gurren Lagann before, but it looked nice. Looked. This is what I came back to:

It’s like going to bed with a model and waking up with Kampfer. Boy, did the production values go down the drain.

And then there was the endless parade of boob gags.

And metal nipples. I miss three episodes and all that’s changed is that the villains have foregone underboob for metal nipples and some third phase that felt strangely like the last phase. The sad thing is that nothing made any difference. It’s not sexy, but it’s not mind-captivatingly obscene either. It’s neither funny nor maddening. It’s just metal nipples.

Star Driver has fallen into the trap of the mundane. You can be thought-provoking, heart-wrenching, adrenaline-pumping, you name it — but you should never be boring. Sorry, Star Driver, but even with metal nipples and a “new” phase, you’re just dull and predictable now. Ugly too, but not even in a telling way.

So wait did you see 16? Episode 16 was the big mid-series climax so it is sort of understandable that the production values dipped a bit. This is essentially the 1st episode of the second half. I highly recommend 16 and it’s cool to put 17 out of your mind as it wasn’t really important.

Also welcome back, any thoughts on any of the new shows?

Eh, whether or not 16 was a mini-climax, every episode should contribute something or else it’s just fluff. Why bother making 17 if we can just disregard it?

I haven’t really seen much of the new shows yet. I saw a bit of Fractale but it really bored me. Gosick looks stupid but I’ve only seen one episode.

I probably watch Star Driver with no spikes in brain activity, yet I don’t exactly…hate it. I dunno. “Shit’s starting to get real” and whatnot, but it’s kinda like the objective is still not clear enough for me to care or feel any sense of urgency. I mean they’re trying to get the giant robots off the island so they can…uh…do what? Take over the world? That never works.

They could use the repetitiveness to their advantage and make it seem like the heroes are trapped in an endless cycle of violence. Unfortunately, they are clearly frolicking on the beach in this episode so, as part of the audience, “Shit’s not quite real yet.”
