Hanasaku Iroha Ep. 12: Status Ko!

Status Ko! Status Ko! But first…

Made with Fin’s help.

Is it strange that I’m more interested in Ko’s fate than anyone else’s in this anime? Ohana wants Tohru and Minko to help her kidnap and drag her mother back to Kissuiso. I’m sure her mother doesn’t have a life that needs attending to or anything. Tohru got the hint, however, that Ohana might have another attachment in Tokyo, so he tells Ohana that he’ll only agree to help if they kidnap Ko as well. Well, gosh, I’m sure Ko has nothing better to do either.

Ohana agrees to upend her closest friend’s life just to prove some point to her mother, but luckily, the girl at the bookstore steps in. She’s a cool girl! Not only did she directly confess her feelings to Ko, she also tells Ohana to stop screwing around with the poor guy’s feelings. Ohana just stammers in response; she doesn’t want to give up Ko, but she won’t say she likes him either.

She does realize one thing though: taking Ko back to Kissuiso would have been selfish. Ohana wasn’t doing it because she wanted to be with Ko. She was only agreeing with Tohru so that she could kidnap her mom. When she finally has that chat with Ko later in the episode, I cheered when Ko said he wouldn’t go to Kissuiso with Ohana.

Yes! Stop being a doormat, bro. Yes, I know that Ohana basically told him not to go, but baby steps. Yes, things are back to the ‘status Ko,’ but hey, maybe the next time we see him, he’ll be dating bookstore girl. At least bookstore girl is considerate of his feelings.

In the end, the little excursion with Ko was all for naught anyway. When Ohana takes her coworkers to confront her mother, Satsuki was all packed and ready to return with her daughter to Kissuiso. Maybe she’s finally considerate of her daughter’s feelings after all; the Matsumae household seem like slow learners.

After HNNNGGGHHH’ing over Ohana’s pigeon-toeing, are you guys gonna HNNNGGGHHH over her mom too?

She reveals to Tohru that she was also an obstinate child when she was Ohana’s age.

Meanwhile, Minko just sits around, feeling all sad about Tohru’s fascination with the Matsumae ladies. She could just tell Tohru that she likes him, but that never happens in anim-… Yo Minko, you act all tough around Ohana and I’m gonna let you finish moping, but bookstore girl has the most guts of any character in this anime. The entire anime! You’re all just balut in comparison.

    I lulz’d at the video.

But this show has been on a steady decline since the first few episodes for me. Ohana’s maturity does not seem to be blooming anytime soon, and whatever of it she had at the beginning looks to have deserted her. The only nice thing about this episode was Tohru, who got a few more lines than usual.

Two cours, man. This means the anime is allowed to be plodding because we get more HNNNGGGHHH scenes to pad the runtime. On that note, I’d like to know who introduced ‘two cours’ to the anime vernacular.

Oh god, not that pedo polar bear again! *whispers*Miiinchii!

From some forum: ‘クール’ (cours) is a slang/technical term that is used in the broadcasting industries in Japan and it means a quarter of a year. As to the origin of the term ‘クール’, a theory is that it comes from the French word ‘cours’, maybe as in ‘au cours de l’année’ (during the year, over the year). Go figure.

Huh, the more you know. When did it start surfacing? I wasn’t seeing ‘cours’ thrown around two years ago though I may just not have noticed.

Hmm, dunno when it became an anime term, I just figured it was some odd Japonais derivative. Mayhaps since it sounds ‘cool’.

Aw shit – that llama-man is going to haunt my dreams, lol.

But anyways, I’m glad that Ohana’s finally realizing what she did wrong. Though it’s a step in the right direction, she’s also going backwards since she’s going too far with the self-loathing and stuff… Geez, just ask Ko out already, you know he was waiting for it. Yet that’s also why he easily refused going to Kissuiso, because he was fed up with stuff :/

Well, he does have a job and he likely goes to school. It’s just kind of weird to think he could drop everything and high step it to Kissuiso with Ohana. Besides, assuming that Ko isn’t just a prop character with no depth, he needs to show growth and move on with his life. IMO, he shouldn’t just pine away in the midst of his young life. If Ko’s just some prop character, then I’m sure the writers will trot him back out again for drum up old drama when they’re out of ideas.

Out of spite, HNNNGGGHHH at Ohana’s mom. Yeah, I went there.

That aside, I liked Ohana getting left out in the cold and finally realizing WHO THE REAL MONSTER IS (Her). And Minko getting stuffed to the point of vomiting by Tohru… with food.
Hell, there was a lot to like this episode; most of the characters who needed a wake up slap got it, and my least favorite character suffered. All in all quite the productive watch.

And yet, the anime would be a lot better with alpacas.

Status Ko is a great and accurate pun for whoever came up with it, lol

Totally agree on the girl from the bookstore. Ohana could learn a lot from her.

Also glad that Ko isn’t being a total doormat for Ohana.

And that Minchi vid was hilarious! Great work by you and Fin there, E Minor.

    Anyway some nice thoughts overall.

This episode and the whole deal with Ko had me flash-backing to True Tears like crazy. Ko reminds me so heavily of Nobuse it’s almost tragicomic. The only difference is Tohru isn’t a protag.
