In an alternate timeline, Earth has been ravaged by an infection that turns most people into zombies. Our cast of misfits — four girls and one guy — have seemingly lived most of their lives within small, tight-knit villages. In fact, our initial trio mentions how they had to escape from theirs. Hmm, what’s that about? Seeing as how they’re pretty young, however, this means they’ve never seen the world pre-infection. As a result, even the sight of a mere building leaves them in awe. When they find a home supply store, it pretty much blows their minds. But what is this show really about?
Well, if you’re into the found family dynamic, then this might be up your alley. None of these characters are directly related to one another, but they’re going to have to become as thick as thieves if they’re going to survive out in the concrete jungle. For now, everyone is getting along for the most part, but there’s always at least one sourpuss that you gotta win over. Still, I hope this isn’t the kind of show where someone eventually gets left behind and has to die. I’m not really in the mood for that sort of thing. A cute, light-hearted jaunt through the abandoned streets of a former big city — as cute and light-hearted as a zombie apocalypse can be — might not be such a bad diversion for late night anime bingin’. It probably won’t be a very thought-provoking show, but from a glance, this seems to be a charming enough cast of characters.
Which leads me to the next major plot point: Aki is looking for her father. Specifically, she is looking to put her father down in case he’s a zombie. That was the promise she made to him before he left for a currently unknown reason and never came home. But what if he’s still alive? Wouldn’t that be something? I shouldn’t get my hopes up, though. One of my favorite shows of all time was A Place Further Than the Universe, and it involved a young girl traveling to Antarctica in a futile search for her mother. Who do you suppose has better odds? A woman in the extreme conditions of the South Pole? Or a man against an innumerable horde of zombies? Is it strange that I would bet on the man? Ah well, I guess we’ll see if Aki will ever find her father. There’s a good chance she’ll never get any real closure. It’s a big world out there.
